Laptop dead after updating Service Pack 1

Right - I seem to have options
1-download another Ultimate Boot for Windows and try that (these all seem to be .exe files - is that right?)
2-download Hirens and try that (currently downloading a .rar file - is that right?)
3-buy a caddy and try that (prob too late for this?)
4-buy the SATA dongle, run option 1 on this while attached to mum's lappy?
DH has given up and thinks we have lost them for good (I am beginning to agree). I just want a time machine to go back 48 hrs and back up my damn picsMy baby girl :kisses3: September 09 :heartsmil0 -

The most important thing to me that I'm ever asked to recover in the hundreds of machines I do each month [ music & movies I ignore ] are the those irreplaceable kids photo's.
Into my 70's I had a camera when no one else in the town had one.
Army as only a kid myself - all photo recorded.
My 1st marriage & kids, and the subsequent other 3 wives / kids
My grandkids, and now my great grandkids recorded
So yes recovering the memories is paramount !
Now to a solution : yes go for the Hirens, use ' imgburn ' to make the disk with. It's important not to boot to the HDD in your own lappie - ok to boot to CD / USB but not HDD.
I'm away till about 9pm, if no one has talked you through recovering your pics by time I get home I'll do a ' walkthrough ' with you.
There are lots of good people on the forum, if they are reluctant, they should think what it would be like if they lost their own bairns photo's.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. I try to be an even-handed poster and accept that you at times may not agree with these opinions or how I choose to express them, this is not my problem. Now when I try to load either the Hiren or the Ultimate boot cd, Ubutu opens and won't let me open the cd. Do I need to get rid of that first? Any idea how?
Sorry to be a pain!My baby girl :kisses3: September 09 :heartsmil0 -
did you install ubuntu or run it from cd, because if you installed it you are making the situation worse, as the point in these boot disks is that they will run from the cd with no need to install0

Run from the cd - DH did it but thats what I told him.
Gotta take little un out now - back in a bit to continue the crusade.#
Thanks all xxxMy baby girl :kisses3: September 09 :heartsmil0 -
how can ubuntu run if you haven't installed it, because either hirens or ubcd will be in the cd drive?0

Goodness only knows. Will see what OH says when he gets back. Think we just bug gered the whole thing. Should have just taken it somewhere and paid to get it done but dunno where.
Very miffed me :-(My baby girl :kisses3: September 09 :heartsmil0 -
when my laptop crashed and i could only get it into safe mode, i emailed all my pics and filles to another persons email address and then i rebooted it back to factory settings. The person then re emailed them back using their computer. Or you could get them to save them the disk and use that when your computer is working again. As for paying someone, i was going to do that but my computer had built in back up system and it was easy to do myself.0

If the laptop now boots into Ubuntu with no CD in it then unfortuantely sometime around post #13 or #19 your OH has actually installed Ubuntu as the operating system instead of running it from the CD. That's now drastically reduced your chance of getting your pictures back.
The more you use the disk now with the installed Ubuntu the less chance you have of getting your pictures back.
It can be done by running suitable data recovery programs from a live CD (for example see PhotoRec here http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntucat/recoverdeletedfiles/ ) but your chances are diminishing.

Lordy lordy
So all is not lost perhaps? Do I try the above or do I wait til tomoz and take it to a local shop and see if they can help? The webpage for that Photorec seems hopeful. Will question OH when he out of the bath (he says he deffo didn't ask it to install nand he better than me on computer stuff).
Will see what he says and will let you know either way.
Thanks again for another possible rescue!!My baby girl :kisses3: September 09 :heartsmil0
