Laptop dead after updating Service Pack 1

If you are able to open the 120GB hard drive without any error message or running the commands it means your drive is mounting OK.
When you open it can you see the Windows folder or the Program Files folders?
When you say the laptop will not even start now, does that include with the Ubuntu CD?

The laptop works with the disc -DH is messing with that one and I'm on here.
No, no program files or Windows folders - just things like sys and lost and found and log. We looked in all of them and there is nothing we recognise.
Think it might be a trip to Maplins for a caddy (only place I can see to get one today £30- do PC World not do them?).
We're a bit worried it's the hard drive that is bust as the XP disc said it couldn't find a hard drive.....My baby girl :kisses3: September 09 :heartsmil0 -
Your drive isn't bust if it mounts in Ubuntu so you'll see the same thing if you use a caddy. Sounds like your file system is corrupt.604!0

No. Since you can boot from a CD you can try Ultimate Boot CD for Windows.

You can use it to run the Vista Recovery Console, Chkdsk or Recuva.604!0 -

It's an HP G7000.
TOG - I'm feeling a bit thick. On that site, I clicked downloads and there are three 'mirrors' available for download. Are they all different? Which do we pick? You'll deserve a few beers after all this!!My baby girl :kisses3: September 09 :heartsmil0 -
DH has already tried the recovery disc linked to in SS's first post. Is this other one different? And DH is also asking what if we install Umberto (:-)) rather than use it without changes or whatever it was?
Sorry for all the questions.....My baby girl :kisses3: September 09 :heartsmil0 -
Don't install Ubuntu. If you've tried Vista Recovery already and that didn't work give Recuva a go from the UBCD4Win. You can download the ISO from any of the mirrors.
