Laptop dead after updating Service Pack 1

seeing as you said in an earlier post you tried to reinstall XP, it looks like you have corrupted the xp installation that was already on the pc. You really need to get a caddy and attempt data recovery, but you may have already overwritten it, despite my warning/advice in post #4. Anyway good luck in whatever you choose to do.0

TOG
Yes DH got to fig 9, it said it had fixed the problems but then wouldn't restart.
Enigma - we had already done the XP attempt before I posted on here so it may well have gone already! From what I can see, Umberto is another operating system that can see our hard drive, just not what is on it. Would this not have been the same with a caddy? It's hard when people advise different things and you just have to try what I can - who knows which is the best advice! I knew this before I posted and I just had to pick an option which seemed best at the time - be it right or wrong. Not having a dig at you or anyone offering advice - just trying to get my pics back!
Off to burn the next cd to try!
PS TOG - the Vista recovery disc nbow cannot see any operating system at all...My baby girl :kisses3: September 09 :heartsmil0 -
I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago with someones PC. I just installed the OS on the same partition as the current OS is installed, but gave it a different name e.g. Windows2, so that the old corrupted OS and data remained intact. Then when I booted into the Windows2 installation, I could recover all data.0

The laptop works with the disc -DH is messing with that one and I'm on here.
No, no program files or Windows folders - just things like sys and lost and found and log. We looked in all of them and there is nothing we recognise.
Think it might be a trip to Maplins for a caddy (only place I can see to get one today £30- do PC World not do them?).
We're a bit worried it's the hard drive that is bust as the XP disc said it couldn't find a hard drive.....
- what does ' I'm on here ' mean ?, does it mean you are on a PC with a SATA port to plug the drive in / use Recuva on the working PC / and save £30
- the odds are if you've screwed the partition tables then spending £30 or £130 and going to Maplins in the rain is not going to help you.
If all else fails get Hiren's BootCD v10.3, if that won't do it for you - nothing will - other than giving it to someone who can work at forensic level.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. I'm on here means I'm on my Mum's borrowed laptop. lol
The rest of your post has lost me I'm afriad...... :-)
TOG The disc I just downloaded is opening in Umberto - not booting by itself. It downloaded an .exe file. Is that right?
I'm losing the will to live - is it worth taking the whole bloody lot to somewhere to try and recover for me or do we give it up and just cry lots? It;s just getting too technical....My baby girl :kisses3: September 09 :heartsmil0 -
Richie - are you suggesting putting the bust hard drive in Mum's laptop? I'd be terrified of breaking hers too (it's just a newer version of mine). I wouldn't dare.....My baby girl :kisses3: September 09 :heartsmil0

Hiren's BootCD, burned with imgburn, will load and work without you having to do anything. Nothing technical at all, that's where / why your struggling with the advice given. In this case it is within your ability to use Hiren's.
I can, but won't supply a lnk for Hiren'sDisclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. No, I was assuming you were on a PC, I certainly would not advise you to compromise someone else's equipment.
If you give me a minute I'll see if maplins still sell an IDE/SATA powered dongle that you can safetly plug into your mams lappie, back in 5 !
- yes they do but the robbin sods want £25 for it hereDisclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion.
