  • Thank you all for your lovely comments and suggestions, I will definitely keep you posted! I really want to breast feed as long as possible, as I can't bear the thought of paying for something I can make myself for free lol. Plus, apart from the slight soreness, I really loved feeding my first one myself. I might make a doctors appointment, although I'm not sure if I would pay more for the prescription than I would spend on the folic acid if I just bought it from Wilkos etc. Will pop in tomorrow and have a look how much it is. I don't think I will qualify for the grant, but hey, at least statutory maternity pay has gone up quite a bit since last time I had it!

You get the grant if you qualify for CTC at higher than basic rate of £545, so a lot of people qualify for it. If you don't qualify now, you may qualify after your baby is born (if you do have one that is) and you can claim until your baby is 3 months old.

    Hi
    baby money saving tips

sign up to every baby club you can find
    hipp organic
    pampers
    huggies
    boots - excellent club
    tesco
    sainsburys
    cow and gate
    babies r us

the vouchers for all of these are good

use reusable nappies, if you want some advice let me know I sell cloth nappies
and I use them on my baby 8 months

Breastfeed, but if you do want bottles/breast pump etc go on freecycle.com or ask in work or look on ebay

for bits and pieces kiddicare is an excellent website and much cheaper than shops

Don't buy anything new if you haven't got vouchers

Doctors will supply you with everything you need, folic acid, iron etc and you can get pg test there

don't worry too much about baby clothes just get sleepsuits asda basic white sleepsuits are £2.75 for 3 and they look so cute in them

If your going to buy in Mothercare go through quidco and get cashback - mothercare is the most expensive and avoid otherwise

Clothnappies are also usually provided free by your Local council either that or incentive schemes,

Sell everything on Ebay as soon as you have finished with it, nearly new stuff sells well on ebay also if you can keep the packaging in your attic/cupboard, sell even better lol

Don't waste your money on baby toiletries, you only need basics maybe a bit of baby bath I have loads, I bought on BOGOF waste of money daughter had ezcema and couldn't use it.

Moses basket also unnecessary put baby in cot or pram/carseat to nap in the day, moses baskets look nice but don't last long

    Hope this helps
    Nat

Thanks Looby, I'll look into that - we just get the basic rate at the moment (well in fact we don't currently get anything as we were apparently overpaid - grrrrr!) but that might change if I have another one!

And thanks for all the tips natlie, I especially agree with the buying of sleepsuits for the first few months - my first one lived in them, they just look so cute and seem so much more comfortable than clothes (I'd spend all day in my pyjamas too if I could lol).

I think I might have a moses basket in the loft actually but will probably need a new matress for it - I really need to have a look at what else is lurking amongst the rafters but don't want to tempt fate just yet :).

Thanks for your responses guys, it's lovely to have somewhere to keep a track of things and somewhere to have a moan when things are not great! And everyone has been so supportive - you are superstars xxx

Right, mission for tomorrow - find a Poundland near where I live! Cheers for that SarahLouise.
Don't do what I did though. I used the Poundland tests, it came up as positive. As it was a cheapie test I didn't belive it and went out and bought a dearer on from Boots. :rotfl:
Nevermind the dog, beware of the kids!

snagglepuss also have a look at the oldstyle board there is a huge thread on saving money when having a baby

    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=71893&highlight=baby

I bookmarked this page ages ago...(when having a broody moment....)....just in case:p Full of useful info....I look in every now and then...really good............

I'm in the letting body get back to 'normal' phase before trying...and preferably lose a couple of stone first:o .....I'm one of the world's worst for putting off though......want to be debt free (pretty sensible IMO)....want a bigger house with a garden...(have a terrace with a rather crappy yard...which is big enough (apparently) to fit 4 kids or more in....though I can't see where!!

    what does DFW stand for???
  • If I remember rightly folic acid is found naturally in certain foods, so rather than spending a fortune buying supplements, eat the right foods. Have a look here orhere for information as to where it can come from.

For my son I was really stressed out about taking those tablets - made worse from the fact that not a jot of food stayed down for three months and I puked every one of them up within half an hour of taking them. With my daughter, I checked the lists and made sure I was having enough food and forgot about the pills.

Good luck with it - and have fun trying! ;)
