Bought a car from a used car sales garage and within 25 miles it has blown up
Options
right we bought a car from a garage today at about 16.30 - hubby went to drive to work and...... 15 miles from home has broken down on the motorway - black smoke and the engine has stopped.
what rights do we have for a refund or anything?
on the drive home there was no problems - the sale guy said that they had had it on the engine diagnostics and there was no problems what so ever and it was running sweet as anything.
I am going to ring them tomorrow but i wanted to know where we stood on this.

02 plate - its a 2002 02 Reg MG ZT 2.5
pd £1200 for it - was on their forecourt at £1975 even tho the web shows it cheaper!
Hubby has just got back with nice aa man - he reckons the head gasket has gone so not a small problem.0 -
Kindly ask them to sort it out. Dont go in all guns blazing as this gets people no where...0

i was going to start by being nice - explain that we drove it back to our house - no probs and then drove it 20 miles further and this is what happened - fortunately it was my hubby driving not me with the kids.
we have lost all faith in the car tho now - surely a head gasket replacement will be more than the car is worth? i don;t know for definate on these things but it seems a big thing to go wrong. we want a refund not a repair as we have 2 kids - one is only 6 weeks old and don;t want a potentially unsafe unreliable car for us or them0 -
No wonder Rover went belly up....0

I have had some experience with those engines. The head gaskets rarely go without some long term warning signs... usually in the form of water in the oil or oil in the water. I had one that lasted two years after I first noticed the tell tale signs before it went bang. For me, the cheapest option was a replacement engine... but then I fitted it myself. In my opinion, it's not worth trying to repair any K series engine once they have gone bang.
If you can, get a refund.0 -
Naaa, the cheapest option is to flog it on when you first notice those tell-tale signs.

refuse the car0

Also just discovered fromt he advert it was a category D write off - the sales person said it hadn't been in any kind of accident what so ever.0
