  • I have a HP Compaq 6720s laptop running on Vista business. The start up is really slow.

There is no infected files on the laptop thankfully. Just wondering how I can speed it up abit.

My laptop is very slow to boot, slow opening most applications, internet explorer (10.0.something) is slow to open a new site (more often than not). The machine is kept fully updated and has Avast! antivirus, having given up with MSE during one of the Java problems a few months ago.
Java was removed at that time.

I realise I probably aught to get rid of Rapport, and maybe the TomTom updater is a nuisance too. Other than that, what's wrong???

    In anticipation,

there's some big letters in post 1

yes you should along with various other O4's which can be disabled with msconfig, if it continues, backup and factory restore is the easiest solution

Well, this is what it looks like after a full factory reset and all the upgrades (including from Vista to Windows 7, with SP1, as it was before). There are some differences - I've gone back to Microsoft Security essentials, and haven't put rapport back, and having completely put the Acer [STRIKE]bloat[/STRIKE]software on this time I don't need touchfreeze...

Anyway, it's much better: here's the new hijack this for comparison -

when you've restored, what difference is there speedwise between say an average spec 4yo laptop and an average spec modern laptop, what differences would I notice?

for most tasks, you'd probably hardly notice any difference, processors have had enough power to do most things quickly for some time, it's only acccumulated software bloat that slows things down - factory restore is a quick (10 minute) way of putting them back to their former glory (but removes all data)
