I know this thread had been around for a while and it really is outstanding advice. Would it however be worth including a 3rd option in addition to factory restore or manual clean up? There is a middle ground to just refresh the Windows installation without affecting installed programs and data that could be a useful solution for many.
In W7/8 (and I believe Vista) it's an 'in-place upgrade' launched from the desktop with an Windows installation DVD (or iso) or a 'repair install' in XP.604!0 -
Takes it away from the speeding up purpose a little. If it expands too far, I think it may put people off from following it.
One problem, is that hardly anyone creates or has the windows disc.
As time goes by, the thread becomes less relevant anyway, most people will upgrade to machines with GB's of ram, the easiest fix to speed or bad infection problems on a newer machine is the backup and reinstall route.
There's scope for a few other guides to cover the common questions if anyone wants to write them, and try and persuade someone to tidy up the stickies.!!

At the poster above me - have you tried downloading a anti-rootkit? You can download one from kaspersky, and if you're infected with a virus, it'll remove it for you. Also try to defragmentate your computer and do a windows update.0
