i don't like mince, so i use either lamb from the roast, or chops, precook (if uncooked meat) with onions, carrots, swede all diced fine, make gravy in the pan, and then do the potato thing
  • Hi this is just a quick post to say that thanks to all the recent posts on here i have today made and eaten my best shepards pie ever.:j

it was made with 2 x reduced to clear organic lamb mince at £1.25 a pack for 500g and then i bulked it out with loads of value mushrooms, onions. I also added a can of chopped tomatoes (which i dodnt normally do) and some grated carott. And then I added a few handfuls of lentils and some stock, herbs and a splash of worcestershire sauce.

I topped it with value spuds at 634p mixed with a couple of sweet potatoes i got for 20p.

This lot made a hughe shepards pie that fed me and oh an and 2 teenagers who eat like adults and a 2 1/2 year old.
there is enough left for a meal for my 2 1/2 year old for tomorrow and i've also made 2 tiny ones for him for the freezer and anoth small one for me and oh for the freezer.

Sorry not a very useful post , but so excited to discover the lentils !!:rotfl: I cooked it for quite a while and no one even noticed them, including the 2 teenages who are usually quite fussy!!

  • My husband makes the Gordon Ramsay one regularly, but uses beef instead of lamb.

If there's enough mince mix left over, I sometimes make it with a layer of black pudding before the potato topping - it's very tasty, honest!

i put in, mince, onion and gravy. and the add a tin of mixed beans.
plus my special ingredients, a dollop of tomatoes pureee and a big dollop of crunchy peanut butter.

if you havent tried it, then do its scrummy...mmm reading this thread has made me want shepards pie tonight
oh as for the mash - ilet the mixture cool a bit first. and as im trying to loose some weight, i sometimes subsitute swede mash for potaoes.I have used a bubble and squeak topping from sundays left overs which is also nice,.

Feel the fear and do it anyway!

  • I don't put gravy in mine, I seem to be the odd one out!

I find the best way to make the potato is to add butter (or spread) but no milk, mash using one of those big potato mashers (the best kind are oval shaped with criss crosses inside the oval) and when it is mashed enough, push the masher down into the potato, and then hold it over the shepherd's pie pot and shake it onto the top. Repeat until the whole dish is covered. It makes it lovely and fluffy because it isn't squashed down, and there are usually big enough air holes to allow a bit of moisture to escape from below and keep the potato from going soggy.

I also always dot with butter to make the crispy bits extra crispy and tasty! For the meat I just fry with a knorr beef stock cube, (much better than oxo!) an onion, some black pepper and 2-3 crushed chopped garlic cloves, drain off the fat, and add carrots (unpeeled, sliced into rounds, put in a bowl of water in the microwave to soften for 2 minutes) and frozen peas.

One of my favourite meals, I usually make twice as much as I need and eat it for the next week for my lunch!!
I don't believe and I never did that two wrongs make a right

I have a shepherds pie in the oven as we speak (well type!) - for tasty mash I do 1/2 potato and 1/2 swede.
  • Hubby made "mystery meat pie" the other night! We've just got a mincer so he went through the freezer clearing out all the old ends of lumps of cooked meat that we'd chucked in the freezer and made shepherds pie (with a mix of pork, beef and lamb!), it was loverly :D
