  • I have lamb mince browned with onion carrots and stock, made last night, looking to make it resemble some kind of shepherds pie... help please!

I have potatoes on the boil just now for the mash on top.

So if it's all ready, what help do you need.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

  • Hi, we are having shepherds pie too!

All you need to do is put your mince and stock in a shallow oven proof dish then top with the mash and bake in a fairly hot oven for 20-30 minutes. Some nice green veg to serve with it and you are done.

If you think the mince needs thickening a bit before you put your pie together I would heat it up in a pan. Put 2 heaped tbsp of cornflour in a dish with some cold water to make a thick paste then stir this into the mince, stirring all the time until it thickens.

    Hope this helps!

If you put cornflour into the mince dont forget you have to cook (the cornflour) it for at least 10 minutes or it will taste awful.

I like a bit of HP sauce in my mince.

I use some Bisto to thicken my mince gravy, if it has a lot of stock then I'd drain it , make the gravy with the stock then spoon your mince into a shallow dish add some of the gravy (keep the rest in the jug to add to the served shephards pie), then put the mashed spuds on, fork it smoothish (if you like you could sprinkle grated cheese on top) then I cook for about 40mins at about 180* as I like my top brown and crispy.. serve with veg and gravy
Just noticed that you are using lamb mince.. my recipe is for beef mince as we don't like lamb mince but it shouldn't make any difference to the finished article apart from the flavour...lol enjoy

Its all a bit of a waste of time and money putting the oven on for 40 mins when it really isnt needed.

Mince take 10 mintues tops to cook, cook it. put it in a dish

Taties are mashed, put it on top of the mince

Both are hot and cooked, why put it in the oven????

If you want some cheese or want the potato brown just put it under the girll for a couple of minutes.

I've done this when in a hurry but its not the same... I love it when the gravy and the mash mix together a little and the edges get crispy and brown , grilling just doesn't do it right...:T ok it may not be money saving but it tastes a whole lot better...

  • Thank you all :)

It had no juice, so I am made some gravy... have baby carrots and peas for on side...
Really want to add some brown sauce now, but have none in :(
I will try the cornflower another time, as I haven't ever cooked with it, just played with it. And don't want any disasters when trying to impress lol
