No, actually they do not. Private companies decide what they want to do, hire the people to do it, and their decisions of this kind always DO always affect either income OR customer service.
ANY private company where sacking people DOES NOT affect either customer service or income is absolutly hopelessly run, and probably won't exist for much longer.
The point is, an honest discussion of public spending cuts would start from the perspective of 'what do we want/need to do' and 'why do we want/need to do it'.
There are a lot of things the state probably shouldn't do. A honest debate would be looking at these areas first. But the perception you can just save money through 'efficiency savings' with no effect on the average customer is nonsence.
I do agree in general with your points here but turning it on its head on the highlighted bit -
ANY public sector service where sacking people DOES NOT affect either customer service or income is absolutly hopelessly run, and probably will exist for much longer if a funding is simply increased year on year0 -

No, but the phrasing of ".....all these Eastern Europeans...." does sound fairly bigoted.
Asylum, illegal immigration and legal economic migration are legitimate issues to tackle the current government on, but if someone told me we need to deal with "all these Polish/black people/Jews/gays etc" I would assume they were indeed quite bigoted and probably impossible to debate sensibly with. They are an EYESORES!!!!0 -

Good point. Just pleased that Gordon didn't start talking about, for example, a secret operation in Afghanistan....
Bottom line remains - could have been a huge breach of security.0 -

Does it? Or does it refer to a particular type of Eastern Europeans?0 -

I don't know. Having lived and worked in Poland myself (earning far more than a more qualified, experienced Polish professional by the lucky accident of being born a native speaker of English, and not paying any local taxes while I was there incidentally) I don't know what Mrs Duffy could mean by "all these Eastern Europeans". Perhaps she will grace the nation with her extensive knowledge of the region? They are an EYESORES!!!!0 -

I'm sure she will have time to reflect whist the contract for selling her story is negotiated.0 -

Quality blog from martin. I suggest you all read it. Then come back & query why we've wasted 15 pages arguing about nothing. It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0
