  • I just called them and asked about the gym membership offer as the 6 months free was not mentioned in my paperwork and they said it wouldn't be, you just follow the instructions in the info and they sort it all out for you. You need to activate your membership by the end of October.

    And also you can earn the platinum discount two years running which I think seems pretty good...

    Yes it is still available, go through the original links on page 1. Then when you see the banner, go through Quidco and the banner should now be in the same place as where you saw it before.

    If you get health insurance as a benefit from work, how much do you pay for this? Also is it possible to upgrade or downgrade your policy at any time?
  • You can amend your policy within the 30 days cooling off period, after this you can only do it at your annual renewal.

    My company provides free health care through AXA PPP however apparently there is some law that says the employee has to be taxed on it, I've no idea how much the tax is, but I guess it's maybe £20 a year or something.
  • Oh, one more thing, some people have said there isn't a Holmes Place / Cannons gym near them, if there isn't one of these near you call Pru on 0800 092 7333 and they will be able to tell you your nearest participating gym. In my welcome pack it gives an example of LA Fitness Kings Lynn. All memberships are peak.

  • AdamLondon - the tax that you will pay on the company funded PMI scheme is called Benefits In Kind Tax (or P11d). Many of the benefits that are provided by a company will have this tax unless the benefit has a a specific exemption from it.

    The rate of tax is the same as your current PAYE marginal tax rate (the highest rate of tax that you pay on the cash/salary received from your employer) . i.e. if your a 'higher rate tax payer' then this will be 40% or if you are a 'basic rate tax payer' it will be 22% of the cost of the premium

    e.g. if the annual cost of the PMI to your company is £100 and you're a basic rate tax payer you will need to pay £22 benefit in kind tax.

    Wow, the amount I pay on my company scheme (£245 per year) pretty much equals what I'd have to pay Pruhealth. That said, we have an in-house GP which can only be used if you are a member of the scheme and I haven't compared the particulars of both policies to see what extra I get at work.

    Do you think if you told pruhealth you already had a policy that you're more likely to claim on in the event of emergencies, it would reduce your premium further? Do you think they'd frown upon you having another plan?
  • andrew_b6k - I doubt PruHealth would reduce the premium as they will have set rules on what contributes to a reduced premium. Also, they would only have your word that you have another plan and would use that one in the event of a claim etc. I'm not sure they'd frown upon you having another plan as it doesn't expose them to any greater risk of you claiming but you never know.

    In reality I suspect that there would be little point in having both policies as there would definitely be duplication of cover and hence cost. The key as always is to read the cover in detail in order to make an informed decision.

    If the GP at work is a big positive then there's always room to negotiate with your HR department to say that you are covered by another policy. They may only be concerned that you are covered with PMI rather than whether you take it out through them or not (they're probably using it as a carrot to convince you to join the scheme so that if you do become ill then they can use the PMI cover to get you back to work quickly). In addition it's important to remember that an onsite GP also means that you only take a short time off work to go rather than a whole afternoon to visit your own GP so its in their own interest to let you use it!
