Suspicious Boiler Quote

Wow lol this has turned into an arguement!
I'm going to put a note to the court that the quote provided is not realistic and if he can provide at least 3 quotes the same then i'll accept it!
Apart from yell.com where would gas fitters advertise, he doesn't advertise anywhere lol i'd love to know where they got his number from, most likely a mate is my guess like!
Would someone be allowed to use a mates rates quote in court for a comparison?0 -
bigstevex - if you have or can get his GasSafe registration number - which you have to have if you are working with gas - then you can go on the GasSafe website and check that he is actually qualified to do the work.
You can also find all qualified engineers near to you if you havent got his reg number.0 -
Surely the size of the boiler is a mute point, if the seller said it had a combi boiler then they need to provide one, how big it is would not be relevant unless the contract lists a size. They could have cheapest smallest combi installed and still meet "their contractual obligations and liabilities" as one developer I worked for used to put it.I have a lot of problems with my neighbours, they hammer and bang on the walls sometimes until 2 or 3 in the morning - some nights I can hardly hear myself drilling

Very true, which we would have accepted, even just the cost of a 'decent' boiler, but their point blank refusal to accept any responsibility angered us! Play them at their own game i guess!0 -
To cut a long story short we're taking small claims court action about the boiler in our house and the defendant has supplied me with a new boiler quote, the only thing is I'm finding it hard to believe its 'true'! They haven't seen the property themselves (the gas fitter that is),
Is the boiler big enough for a 4 bedroom house also?
Remove existing boiler and fit Potterton Performa 24 Combi, including new flu, filling loop and programmer
£677.97
Break down of cost
Boiler £457
Labour £120
Vat £100.97
I've priced this myself and the boiler plus parts is nearly £700
Can any gas fitting comment if its achievable to fit it at this cost please,
Thanks in advance for your help
24kwh will give you a warm dribble out of the taps.
No one will fit that for 120quid.

Totally agree. It's amazing what size boiler the "whole house sizing" method pops out. You guess at it and find that your way out. I've been shocked sometimes at how far away I was from the correct size. I totally agree that the AVERAGE 4 bed would normally needs no more than 18kw FOR HEATING. It's usually less.I would say that the average 4 bed house would need no larger than an 18Kw boiler.
I would personally range rate the 24Kw boiler down to this level to help keep it in condensing mode for the greatest amount of time.
Back to the OP. It does appear to be very cheap. Check his Gas Safe registration - he is obliged to give you his number. Also, there is no mention of other materials. He may need to re-carcass the gas. Make sure he is going to register it.
Back to the argument on combi sizing. A combi isn't sized just on the size of the house but on the flow rate and pressure available. It's no good fitting a 35kW combi boiler if you've only got 10l/min available. It would be wasted. And the flip side, a 24kW ain't gonna cut the mustard if you've got 20l/min. If I had a £1 for every call out i've been to were the customer complains about the water going cold when the bath is running.... I'm so tempted to say that's coz you've had a cheap job done with an undersized boiler!
I've been there myself.
Me: "What make of boiler did you have in mind?"
Customer: "The cheapest"
Me: "OK. Cheapest it is. I'll put in a Ferroli 28kW (for instance)"
Customer: "Is that the cheapest?"
Me: " Well no, the 24kW is cheaper but will struggle with the flow rates available at your tap."
Customer: "OK i'll have the 24kW."
Also, i've fitted cheapy Glow Worm Betacoms as replacements for water heaters. I just loop the heating circuit and remove the link so it will never fire up in heating mode. Why would that not work? If the diverter valve never moves over to the heating position I don't see a problem doing this with any combi. What is special about Intergas boilers?0 -
Intergas are designed for them to be used as water heaters only, if you want to, you don't even have to fill the system side with water to do this. Just connect the hot and cold domestic side up. Job done.
All you do is tell the pcb that you just want it as a water heater0 -
thats way too cheap for a boiler swap 120 quid for a days work and then the guy will have pipe and fittings on that, the kw of the boiler will go on how many bathrooms and sinks in your house check on worcester bosch web site will tell you there what u need, for a extra 70 i allways recmonned go a size up for better hot water perforemce0
