Sainsburys have removed aspartame from ALL their own brand soft drinks fizzy and flat (squash). Can't remember which one they use instead but its not Aspartame!
They use (the misleadingly named) sucralose. It's still an artificial sweetener created in a chemical plant and is not "Made from sugar so it tastes like sugar" a slogan that Splenda got fined for and banned from using!.....0 -

Links please
I for one don't personally believe all the aspartame hysteria - Aspartame is just a simple molecule that is broken down once ingested into components (Aspartic acid, phenyalanine and methanol). You get these same components from other foods.0 -

I was hoping you may actually provide a link which has scientific backing - all the ones you have provided have no references.
" [FONT=Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif][SIZE=+1]The aspartic acid acts as a neuroexcitatory agent. When NutraSweet is digested, it yields 10% methanol (wood alcohol). The wood alcohol (methanol) is widely distributed throughout the body including brain, muscle, fat and nervous tissue. It is then metabolized to FORMALDEHYDE which enters the cells and binds to the proteins and DNA (the genetic material). "
A glass of tomato juice has about 6 times the amount of methanol that an equivalent aspartame beverage has. Tomato juice should probably be avoided also then.

Google tells me that:
Diet Pepsi contains aspartame
Pepsi Max contains aspartame and acesulfame potassium
Edited to add:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acesulfame_potassium
I know aspartame isn't great but I think I'll stick to the diet version...
Just thought I'd update you... no matter what google says, the cans of diet Pepsi in my cupboard contain acesulfame potassium too. Maybe the US version is different?
It's only a game

Luckily the dry taste is usually enough to alert me to its presence so I dont drink much, but one mouthful can leave me in pain for an hour or more
I get exactly the same symptoms and like you I can taste it quickly. I got causght out a couple of weeks ago when having a day out. I had gobe into a cafe with DH and as it was a lovely day I decided to have an ice cream float with fanta. Imagine my horror when I took one sit and tasted the dreaded aspartame
The other drinks that are now safe also are Morrison's premium brand. They have lovely ice cream soda for making floats and it's aspartame free, as are all of that range.
I really don't care that so many people just believe that there is an aspartame hysteria happening. I know what it does to me and for that reason alone I avoid it. What does irritate me is that more and more manufacturers are slipping it into their drinks presumablely to save money.0 -

It sounds like you get it a lot worse than me.
I find it hardest because my symptoms dont show immediately if I only have a small amount - the worst ones are the day after - I can really tell if I have had a lot though as I feel terrible.
I worry more about putting all of that into the children - I dont allow anything with atificial sweeteners or colours at home (especially aspartame) - but when they are out it is almost impossible to avoid as it is in EVERYTHING!
As a teenager I used to eat a packet of mints at lunchtime at school - I spent almost every afternoon feeling tired and listless - it wasnt until years later I connected the two and realised that they probably contained Aspartame or something else just as harmful - I wonder how many children now are suffering needlessly just because a handful of 'scientists' say that they are safe?
(and just as a reminder to those who are sceptical - remember when they said smoking was safe, asbestos was safe, lead paint was safe, beef did not cause CJD and there was no connection between artificial colouring and hyperactivity:))0 -

That really annoys me too - I wouldnt mind but I dont even want sweet drinks!! I prefer them dry.
There are some lovely drinks that are completely natural though, although not many places stock them and they are quite expensive:

God help me if they start putting it in wine - then my life really will be over...0 -
Mints are a no go for me as well, as is most chewing gum.
As Mudgekin says whether the scientific evidence proves anything or not, I know the effect it has on my body, and that can not be good for anyone.0
