Disconnecting the ring wire does wonders too!0

I wouldnt fixate on it too much. The important things are throughput and a stable line.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0

I used to be a serious tweaker but the fire has cooled, maybe I'll start again1
Router stats (thanks MkDonald):
Uptime: 0 days, 13:43:28
DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,230 / 4,847
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 19.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 25.5 / 45.5
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 6.0 / 8.5
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 72 / 852,156
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 72 / 129
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 92 / 84
With a line attenuation of 45.5dB you should get around 7.2mb. My attenuation is around 47dB and I usually get around 6Mb.
As kiwibreaks said it's not going to change on its own.
Have you got extension wiring? Are you using an extension socket or the master socket? Have you used the test socket behind the master socket faceplate to see what speed you can achieve?0 -
My line attenuation is 39.0 and i get the above result.0

You would have initially synced at 6dB margin but it is currently running at 8.5dB.
Assuming you grabbed those stats at some time near when you posted (1:00am) this is a little odd as normally the noise increases so the margin falls during the hours of darkness. The currently elevated margin probably explains what...
http://be.nfshost.com/
... makes of your stats...Expected download speed at your current sync rate: 515.64 KB per second (or 4125 kbit)
Expected upload speed at your current sync rate: 130.85 KB per second (or 1047 kbit)
The average upstream sync speed attained by other users with the same upstream attenuation as you (25.5dB) is 1055 kbit (175 kbit or 17 percent slower than your connection). If you are using Fast Path, then that would explain the increase.
Problem: Downstream sync speed of 4847 kbit is 1932 kbit slower or 72 percent of the average for connections with the same downstream attenuation of 45.5dB.
Problem: Signal Noise Margin Down (8.5dB) is extremely high. Be* may have put you on this profile to compensate for a high error rate. If you know that your line is actually reliable, lowering the value to the average of 6dB should give a sync speed increase. Call Be* to change it (3dB steps only).
Problem: There are some FEC Up errors. FEC errors are *corrected* errors, so these are probably nothing to worry about. Speedtouch routers have a habit of misreporting FEC errors anyway.0 -

You say you were a tweaker - dis that tweaking include ringwire removal?
I used to be a tweaker, not had the time and the passion has gone way down! For example: what's the ringwire? With a line attenuation of 45.5dB you should get around 7.2mb. My attenuation is around 47dB and I usually get around 6Mb.

I'm using one of the sockets in the living room. In the store cupboard, there is what I presume to be the BT master socket (there are 2). One of which has a cable running to the ?patch panel. Should I be using any one of these instead of the socket in the living room?
Finally, I think someone suggested waiting till the training period is over before messing with panels, routers etc, good idea?
Thanks.Tough times never last longer than tough people.0 -

Think yourself lucky! O2 said I could get 7mb too.
This was a typical evening speed....0 -
All the tuning etc. should really be done before you even have ADSL connected but it is always better to make improvements ASAP. In fact "training" is an absolute myth - nothing different happens in the first 10 days than happens at any time. O2 will note your speeds and tell you if you are on the right product and BT will note the lowest speed as I mentioned above. BT DLM will increase your target margin if the line is unstable and eventually reduce it if the errors and stability improve. I've seen it said that O2 only run any DLM for the first few days but I don't think they have any automated DLM at all.
Right optimum setup...
Identify the master socket - there will only be one - it will be the first socket as the wire comes in from outside. Remove the faceplate and either replace it with a purpose built filtered faceplate (from ADSLNation) or remove all the wires on terminal #3. Don't use any plugin extensions. Connect your router to the master and run ethernet to the PCs or use WiFi or use HomePlug.
If there is a problem with that optimum just remember that the main aim is to eliminate the pesky ringwires. Ask if that brief exp[lantion is not enough or alternately have a read - http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/socket.htm0 -

The OP is on LLU as can be seen from his upstream sync. Plus he is on ADSL2+ and I don't think O2 put Access users on that.0 -

Correct. A short lived mistake though, as I cancelled the day after that speed test. Thank heavens for the O2 30 day 'Happiness' guarantee.
I switched to Plusnet and now get 6 mb+.0
