The combination of low price, unlimited, and BTw IPstream is toxic and the result is invariably contention so high that the service is virtually unusable. The same story has been repeated with countless ISPs right from when ADSL was first introduced. I really find it hard to believe that new ISPs suffer the same pratfall time and time again.0

Right, had a look and the ringwire is already disconnected.
2 master sockets and only one has a cable running from it but it's not connected to the faceplate of the socket. Wired to the phone host panel and no ring wire used at all.

Well that looks a complete dogs breakfast and is not using standard telephony wiring.
I can't tell what is going on with the ethernet patch panel but so long as there is no telephone wiring connected to it then it is largely irrelevant as RFI from ethernet tends to be at higher frequencies than those used for ADSL.
It almost certainly accounts for your poor sync. If you can't sort it out yourself then I think you'll either have to call BT out to regularise the master socket wiring or put up with what will be a problem line - especially as we head back into winter with longer hours of darkness.0 -
Beware o2 access unlimited, it is not unlimited at all. They have set up a new department to e-mail/call customers who use larger amounts and tell you to reduce your usage or they will terminate your contract.I was told I had used 51gb last month, as I do not download anything i don't know how and that if if was not reduced I was out.But they can not tell you what or where you are using it.

It will need a bit more investigating but will not ask BT. My speed is OK just not 'ludicrously fast' like O2 say it would be!
It seems that they've split the data and voice sections right from the get-go and sent the voice via a separate system. Just looking at the wiring suggests that one thing I could do is hook up my router direct to the BT master (faceplate off) and see.
I will browse the net a bit more and see what I come up with (the tweaking juices are flowing now!).
Any suggestions gratefully received!Tough times never last longer than tough people.0 -
FWIW, I rang O2 to report my 'slow' speed (I'm not that fussed, I was content with 2mbps years ago though I would like to get advertised speed).
O2 guys said would do something with noise on the line (increase maybe?) and I should turn router off for 10s. Explained that still within the 10 days of activation and he said 'no matter'. Did as was instructed.
Nothing's happened, speedtest now shows 3.88mbps (3.71mbps before call to O2). Ping still the same etc.
TBH, I don't mind 3.7 -4mbps. Just wondering about it cos it seems my (free) sports stream with bet365 is looking a tad grainy!

I know I said I didn't mind the speed and all but now my live video stream is looking very poor indeed.
Did another speedtest.net check and this is what I get:
Download 2.17mbps
Upload 0.80 mbps
Ping 58ms
Now, now, now, this is in no way acceptable.
I watch videos online quite a bit especially live sports streams and this ain't good.
What can I do? Thanks for the usual help guys.Tough times never last longer than tough people.0 -

So check your modem stats again - it may be an o2 Supporter just upped your S:Nmargin target - so instead of your modem being told to aim for the normal 6dB, it's now being told to aim for a higher "more resilient against noise on the line" 9 or 12 or even 15dB target and hence your modem synch could well be "(very) depressed" like you are!
If the Down S:Nmargin isn't around 6dB then force the modem to resynch (eg from its' menu system or else turn it off for 10 seconds) and get its fresh stats. If the S:N margin is 9+/12+ then phone o2 to get your S:Nmargin reset to the normal/default 6dB unless you really DID want/need a higher margin to keep synch on your line.

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 19.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 25.0 / 44.5
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 6.5 / 14.0
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 20 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 2 / 0

The down sn margin is 14.0 which I presume is not ideal.
Will do a reset/resynch.....Tough times never last longer than tough people.0
