Hi all.

Speedtest.net gives figures as follows for my O2BB connection:

Download 3.99mbps
Upload 0.92 mbps
Ping 58ms

O2 says I can get 7mb but today (just activated this morning) this is what speedtest is showing. It's significantly lower than 7!

All help much appreciated!

Very open to tweaking as needed.

Dunno why it picked Aberdeen, ain't my neighbourhood.

Thanks.

It'll take up to TEN DAYS before your broadband settles down, the speed will go up & down & your connection may even drop off once or twice.
This is normal for all ADSL broadband services.

What speed can your line handle?

O2 told me I can get 13Mb when I know for a fact I can only get 7Mb. (5Mb with BT)
  • Thanks. The BT checker says anywhere from 3.5 - 4.5 mbps. Are there things I should do in the meantime to optimise my line/connection while it's settling in? BTW, I removed the broadband assistant from my start up list.

I changed to 02 a few weeks ago they said up to 10mb on the checker but i get this

Cheaper than sky and I'm LLU'd now, unlike sky.

I have tried various things, even changing the DNS setiings, to no avail.

Not really, ensure the microfilters are on all phone sockets that are in use,if you have any hard wired phone extensions, you could try disconnecting the orange wire from the faceplate (connection 3) & dont turn the router power off unless you need to reboot it.

Do nothing if it's in it's training period. They always start the connection at a 'poor' noise ratio to ensure you can initially connect, then reduce it over the next few days until they get to the best possible mix of speed and reliability. If you start tweaking it now (and especially rebooting your router) all the training will see is that you've a completely unstable line and reduce your speed. Your best bet is to take the line stats the router currently has and then take them every 12 hours or once per day to see if it is changing. Once it stops changing it's likely that you are then at the O2 settings. Then you can start tweaking etc. if you a Netgear etc.

The router you get with O2 is a Thompson box.

You can use a netgear and there is firmware to flash the router to enable you to tweak it further.

    No they don't.
With both O2 and BTw based systems your initital target noise margin is 6dB. All O2 do is check what syncs you've been getting and let you know if you are on the correct package. BTw record the lowest sync achieved over the first 10 days and will not recognise a fault unless it drops below 70% of that.

Whatever speed you are getting now is probably all you will get unless there is something which you can do to fix up your inernal wiring.

Post up your line stats if you want some comment on whether or not you may get better.

Whether you are on o2 Access (the generic ADSLmax product) or o2 Std/Prem/Pro (the LLU packages) will have SOME bearing on it all.

If you're not sure how to get your stats from the o2 box try this website from an o2 subscriber:
    http://www.o2help.co.uk/router-statistics/

And beyond that you've been getting excellent/fast help here, but could also join in the o2 forum over in the ThinkBroadband forum at:
