New Baggage Allowance??????????

  • I just flew over the weekend...

On Friday, any liquids could not be taken on board but could be bought in duty free (as long as you were not flying to US).

On Sunday (coming back) I was able to bring everything in my bag on board as carry on luggage.

Keep an eye on the BAA's website as they keep updating it. Don't bother with your tour operator as it's not their rules which are in place.

  • I am flying to Singapore and Australia shortly and phoned British Airways to check on baggage allowance. I was advised that the allowance for hold baggage is 23kg and any extra will be charged for, even a couple of kg.

No extra to compensate for the loss of cabin baggage allowance, I consider this to be totally unfair as their policy was that no weight restriction applied to cabin baggage providing that it was packed in the correct size bag.

At one time it could be argued that cabin baggage was intended for items required during the flight but when they introduced the new rules that cabin baggage at any weight was O.K. providing that it fitted into the correct size bag and that the passenger was able to lift it unaided into the overhead locker that argument was destroyed. I suspect that they introduced that policy as it would save them time and money if passengers had nothing to be checked in as hold baggage.

I understand that suitcases are more difficult for baggage handlers if they are heavy, therefore I suggest that British Airways could allow a small bag weighing no more than 5kg to go into the hold in addition to the normal 23kg suitcase, especially when flying long haul. This would at least go some way to giving passengers back the allowance we had before the restictions were brought in.
My understanding is that some of the smaller airlines now have an increased allowance for hold baggage.

    Poor show British Airways!!

  • Karrimor do a decent range of small backpacks... I have a 10 litre pack which measures 40 x 27 x 13. You should be able to get away with a 15 or maybe 20 litre pack.

You can get them from Blacks or check any outdoor/hiking shop.

  • :hello: , Just got back from a week in Poland on Sunday.

OH decided a few weeks ago that it would be a good idea to take "cabin" sized luggage as we would be travelling around by train, so we bought 3 small cases (£5.99 from Tesco!) only to find two days before we went "NO HAND LUGGAGE ALLOWED" so, undeterred we set off with minimal luggage.

When we got to the airport (Luton) there was no problem with anything bought in duty free & luggage allowance was increased by 10kg by Wizzair. Carefully watching Euronews and the BBC World channel we saw that hand luggage excluding liquids was now okay :j and we purchased a Glass Vase and a beautiful LARGE glass bowl as we would take them as our hand luggage and as everyone knows, the thing to bring back from Poland is Vodka & Glass so we bought a couple of small bottles that would fit inside shoes in our cases and thought we could buy bigger bottles in duty free - WRONG! :naughty: Polish airports did not allow any hand luggage nor could you buy anything in duty free (The shop was closed) and we were searched twice (2nd time just before boarding!) So no voka  Oh Well! - We will just have to go back to get OH his Vodka! Fortunately, the Vase AND Bowl survived the journey as I stuffed my fleece jacket inside for padding.
Seriously though :T Poznan & Wroclaw are fantastic places to visit, Food and beer:beer: were cheap and plentiful )

My daughter returned from Dubai last Wed 16th via CDG Paris. Her hand luggage was a handbag and vanity case whichof course was ok when she left Birmingham the week before. She checked in at Dubai no problem. The problems started at the checkin Paris.Security bloke emptied her hand baggage and proceeded to confiscate certain items, put the rest of the stuff back and said all was ok. Then further on, another check, this time by female member of staff who couldnt speak a word of English but her attitude was vary curt and surly. She went through the same procedure and confiscated lots of items that had been put back by the first security check as ok!!! She did very well for mascara face powder eye shadows etc. etc. etc. In fact she was 1 of about 6 security staff, all with bags full of booty... oops I mean confiscated items. I had rung Thompson and Air France the day before and was told that hand luggage was not affected when travelling TO UK only when departing. So folks BEWARE!! carry as little as possible when travelling from Paris

    I usually carry:
One bottle of water -- CAN'T BRING NOW
some chocalate just in case -- SHOULD BE OK
handcream, eye cream, face cream -- CAN I BRING THESE?
Aerosol bottle of Evian for the face -- NO CHANCE
Cosmetics -- I'D BETTER LEAVE THEM IN THE LUGGAGE AND USE IT AFTER LANDING

Any idea on whether I can bring handcream and eye cream etc. on board?

    Thanks!

It says on BAA website no lotions, so I would guess not :(
It also says that you can take anything that you buy in the departures loung on board as long as you are not travelling to the USA

Hi I think that any hand creams etc are still classed as liquids as is lipstick so I would play safe and put in luggage, we couldn't even have chewing gum or boiled sweets!
