So we blame the employer now?0 -
they may not have had unlimited credit,it may just be the costs racked up under roaming take time to update?0

From experience I know that employers do not hand out written warnings without full investigation.
I think the OP has had his last chance, sorry, harsh but true.0 -
Good luck with it. You made a mistake in giving your family the combination number to your briefcase (why on earth would they need that?) and I'm sorry your brother took advantage of you. You must be feeling very betrayed by him. But as you say, young people do the most stupid things sometimes, and he is your brother. Of course you are not going to drag him down to the police station, but I also think you are making excuses for him. You are angry - but not angry enough I think! He didn't make a 'mistake'. He deliberately stole the SIM, used it, and replaced it secretly when he returned. OK, thinking this wouldn't be noticed is just youngsters stupidity. But the decision to steal from you, was criminal.
You've said nothing about his repaying the money to you. And what if you do lose your job over this?
I'd have the little b'stard working 24/7 till I got all my money back AND some compensation for now being unemployed.
As to your firm - who knows. You'll find out at the meeting. The only way to help yourself at all is to immediately re-pay the money, explain that you'd given the combination out top family without thinking of the possible consequences, have now changed your combination to a secret one, and throw yourself on their mercy.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j
OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.
Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.0 -

Theres only so much I can say to express my disgust on his betrayal. I have already made him sell his consoles, computer, mobile phones and and use his savings to pay be back. He has accrued about £1700.
Payback IS going to happen whether I stay or go. I am not one of those guys who is cheap, disloyal and thinking of doing a runner - this amount is going to get paid no matter what.
I just pray my company can side with me and accept the repayment without putting me in the firing line.
Thanks,0 -
The company won't care or mind that you ran up a £2000 bill so long as you pay it back!
If you have 1700 from your brother you're most of the way there. Don't worry about it.0 -
Well OP i'll say what i'm sure a lot of others have been tihnking.
If I was your boss you would be unemployed by the end of the week. Your story sounds completely made up and like a very poorly thought out cover story to hide YOUR fraud.
Looks to me like you gave your work mobile to your brother to take on holiday in the hope that your work wouldnt notice, afterall a few calls off it is normal right? Other employees use theirs quite often so they wont notice a few from you. But they did and you panicked and made up a crazy story.
Even if this isn't the case you are guilty. If your brother STOLE the phone and you know he did then you will have a police crime number confirming this wont you. If you haven't reported the theft to the police then quite frankly there has been no theft.
You say that you trust your family but that still makes no sense at all. I trust my family but why would I say to my brother and mother 'oh by the way, this is my work briefcase, its got NOTHING at all to do with you, you will never have ANY need to go in it but because you're my family the combination lock for it is 0124. Even in the bizarre situation that you DID do that, why the hell would your brother some months later still know a random combination lock for something that has nothing to do with him? Doesnt add up at all.
Lets say that all the above unlikely events are true and he took it without your knowledge, are you seriously trying to tell us that you have had no need to go in your briefcase since Feb? I'm sorry but regardless of how often you decided to use it you should have at least checked it was still around within the last two months. Two months without checking on company property in your possession is not looking after it regardless of where you thought it was. And the fact is you didn't think it was secure, you knew it was somewhere that people had access to. Someone that you yourself describe as a chav.
As I said, if you were my employee you'd be down the road by the end of the week. Its a simple case of you not looking after company property and allowing it to be abused. YOU created the situation that led to it being abused, YOU shoulder the responsibility.0 -

You haven't done anything to him. He hasn't been punished, all that you have asked him to do is pay for the calls he made. According to you he STOLE your works property, the police will decide what to do when you report him for theft. Until you report him for theft he didn't steal anything and your whole defence is a sham0 -
