    Is this laptop any good?

Yes fine for surfing and word processing and some old/low spec games - cheap and acer are a good make....as long you dont rely on their support which is not great - but not the worst

i wont be buying as i wouldnt buy anything from Comet - awful company

I e-mailed Comet to see if they would price-match Tesco's price last week...they responded by taking the laptop off its website :rotfl: .

It was £349.99 online and £399.99 instore last week  .

Bought one from Tesco in the end. DD loves it!!
Does anyone know if this can take 1024mb RAM?

This will take up to 2048MB RAM (in 2 banks of 1)
  • Hi Point 3,

Thanks for your reply above. Excuse my dimness, but could I please ask you how you would go about increasing the RAM to the figures you mentioned? Is this something you could do yourself, with no technological knowledge or would you have to take it to an engineer to do? Sorry, I have no concept about adding memory at all. Also roughly how much does it cost to add more memory?

    Many thanks.
    Regards

    Hi travel_freak,

    Adding RAM is really easy...

For this notebook, upgrading to 2048MB is not likely to be worthwhile. There is a useful memory selector tool on http://www.crucial.com/uk/ to help choose the correct memory module. According to Crucial the most popular upgrade is an extra 512MB (200-pin SODIMM DDR2 PC2-4200) which would bring the total RAM up to 768MB. This costs £37.59 from Crucial. Or you could buy the same spec from Lowest on the Web for £25.98 delivered, see: http://www.lowestonweb.com/Products/DisplayInfoMain.asp?e=E42351D9-AB2C-478A-9F01-36CA17D9469D.

To add the memory, switch off and unscrew a small plastic cover on the base of the machine. There are 2 slots for RAM on this machine. Leave the existing 256MB module in place. Swing the 2nd holder out and slide in your new 512MB module. Place the holder back into position and replace the plastic cover.

No extra software is needed. When you next boot up, you can check the amount of RAM available by clicking CTRL, Alt and Del. Click on 'Performance' and look up 'Physical Memory (K)'. This will read over 700,000 if you've added the 512MB as suggested.

If you're going to buy from Crucial, make sure you go via Quidco as they have 5% off automatically plus 7% cashback.

although the laptops from currys and tesco are the same model number they are slightly different.

the tesco one has a high gloss screen, the currys one has the usual dull type.
the tesco one has backup discs, the currys one does not.
the tesco one comes with microsoft works and power dvd, the currys one does not.

my friend bought the currys one and i had a hell of a job getting it to play dvds, even after updating media player and installing all the latest codecs the only way i could get it to work was by installing a copy of win dvd. my neice bought one from tesco and it all worked no probs without any updating at all

So is this Comet one a good deal for a first laptop?

I just went to the Tesco next to BWFC and they are sold out.

    For RAM, forget Crucial.

512mb sticks from LowestOnWeb for £25.98. (and 3% from Quidco)
1GB sticks from eBuyer for £57. (and 1.5% from Quidco)
