I have got my 2nd driving test on Friday and just curious about what sort of journeys other people do for their first independant drive after passing their test.

So...where did you go for your first drive and why?

  • To the petrol station as I've never bought a used car yet that has had petrol in above the red line! :rotfl:
  • my bird at the time used to stay 24 miles away and getting there on a moped (albeit a dt 50 with a malpassi bigbore piston and barrel, fresco exhaust and cr80 carb and altered gearing so it done 65) was hell in the winter so that was the first place i went. cant beat getting your hole in an orion. working heaters ftw!:p
  • Just run around gaining experience and thinking I was Sterling Moss (without the speed)
I remember at night i couldnt drive above 40 for some reason. probably due to the reduced visibility.

Two days after passing my test I had a row with my husband and stomped off on my own in the car, which was the best thing I ever did. We lived on the Isle of Wight and I drove to the other side of the Island and treated myself to a really nice meal. Doing it all on my own and taking myself off for a good lunch was a terrific boost to my confidence.

Yeah, I remember the days of riding my scooter in the winter...not fun at all!

Ha, yeah tell me about it. I bought my first car a week ago and it's sitting on my driveway and everytime I switch on the ignition to mess with the radio or whatever, the petrol light comes on. Think I may either walk to the petrol station with a petrol can or just pray there's enough petrol to get me there :)

Sounds like a good thik your husband did for you there (in one way) :) It must of been a good feeling driving that distance though.

Managed about 200 miles on a complete variety of roads including motorways - loved every second, being the only person in the car. But please please please take it easy. It was a long long time ago that I passed my test and I am and was a complete petrolhead, but I did have a big crash about 9 months after passing my test. It's the only crash I've ever had and it was purely down to inexperience. You may think you're a driving god (as I did) but it takes years to become an experienced driver.

ps. my insurance after that crash was unbelieveable. The Audi Coupe GT was soon replaced by a Gazelle Beige Nova Saloon:rotfl:

Have fun and good luck on Friday.:)

Thanks. Well my plan is to go for a reasonable drive but not sure where yet. Maybe find a fairly quiet motorway and see how it goes :)

My first trip was to the take away for a pizza! My folks were chuffed that they could send me and not have to go themselves... I also did a lot of driving to friends' houses who lived nearby to show off...

I would say choose somewhere close and familiar at first to build up your confidence, then gradually go a bit further. Don't go straight onto a motorway, build up to it with various dual carriageways first, as they are pretty similar.

But of course you may want to dive straight into the deep end, in which case your plan of finding a quiet motorway might work. It is nice to have somewhere to go to though, even if it is just a scenic spot or a friend's house for a cup of tea... :)

Oh, and congratulations! (I assume you passed!)
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!
  • good luck for the test btw
