When you have shoes that have worn out it may be worth keeping some of the laces- by doing this we managed to replace a broken pair of OH's with some we had salvaged from a pair we disposed of at the weekend so no outlay necessary!

Also taking the shoes to the cobblers before they fall apart,so avoiding having to buy a new pair!;)

Shoes last longer if you don't wear them every day.I never wear the same pair of shoes for two days running.

Reminded me of what I see as standard behaviour but others may not see it as so. When throwing out old clothes...
    1 use them as dusters
2 Remove any zips and buttons

Then you will have zips and buttons to use as replacements when needed, also you can change buttons to change the look of outfits AND I can remember many happy hours playing with buttons as a kid, I know I'm THAT old.. lol

I used to play with buttons too. I cut buttons off garments that aren't good enough for the charity shop.Old towels and t shirts get cut up to use as rag but I do like "proper" dusters.
  • I used to spend hours playing with the buttons from my Mum's button tin.My favourite were the pink ones with a black poodle on.

I rescued my Mum's button tin when she died. I have added it to the buttons (much more boring ones) that I have collected in 40 years of marriage. My children used to play with 'my' button tin, and grandchildren now play with the 'combined' one - which is much more fun! My favourites have little ducks on :)

Jiffy bags that are too torn to be reused can be taken apart and used for padding in other parcels.

Hi all :hello: Loooong time not been here. :o

I have found an interesting little page, mostly to save time when preparing food but there's also scope for saving money by cutting out waste: http://www.fooods.net/food-tips-life-hack/
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.
  • thanks quasar great find I have bookmarked that.

I made 3 sofa cushions today out of OH's old pillow that was squashed flat as a pancake. It had that kind of kapok style material in that when you tore it apart was suprisingly springy again and more of it than it looked. the plain cotton cover was a bit manky so its in the washer ready to be used as floor cloths or dusters.

freebies at the moment seem to be coming in lovely shiny paper packaging: I had a purple and a blue one that I've cut up to make windows for chinese lantern style xmas decs.

Holding onto old buttons is a great idea, I've hoarded ones that come spare with clothes and when I forget which one they go with I string them up onto old ribbon to make light pulls/bag charms/mobile phone charms. Also they work in the middle of a felt cut out as a flower shaped brooch to add colour to a winter coat

The lids of the pringle tubes are just the right size for covering an opened tin of cat food [I know the frugal advice would be not to buy Pringles but mine were from 2007!]
A tip [not mine] from the 2011 Frugal Living Thread here- if you want lots of wooden beads for a project one of those beaded car seats is a good, cheap source.
Spotted this on my rounds the other day- someone had used all those broken clothes hangers to push into their borders to stop the felines erm digging it over for them:eek:

Appogies if this has ready been mentioned.

When I need to wipe over work tops (not when really messy) and paintwork, I have an old spray bottle which I have filled with a made up solution of Flash or Flash substitute.

I get a dry microfibre cloth then spray and wipe dry.

This beats making up a bowl full of flash liquid and dipping in cloth then wringing out.

It works out bags cheaper than the ready made sprays.
