Thanks for the link,it looks really interesting.
  • I went to town with mum today and we went into poundland, which is fab. Anyway I've heard you lot talk about Stardrops and noticed them in the shop, but there was original stardrops and stardrops with ammonia, which is best to use?
And also how do you use it in the dishwasher? Do you just pour it into the tablet Compartment?
I'm trying so hard to be thrifty, but it doesn't come naturally. You lot are an inspiration!

winnie I just buy the ordinary one as I don't like using ammonia. I don't have a dishwasher but not sure it would be a good idea to use it in one, unless it was a very tiny amount, as in a washing machine it lathers up quite alarmingly! Someone will be along to set us both right soon though :)

Winnie for your dishwasher only use about half of what a tablet looks like volume wise for your stardrops. I use the original one as it does everything (kitchen, bathroom, oven, fridge, windows, dishes and washing). Ammonia and I don't get on (I can't breathe), but I have been told that one is good for burnt on baking trays etc but personally why buy two types when you can buy one?
You can also get a pine one which is disinfectant, which I haven't used myself but I know a friend who has boarding kennels uses it to clean down the kennel runs and drains.

.......Oh, the reason I know how much to put in the dishwasher? I filled it to the brim and came through to my kitchen resembling an Ibiza foam party! ...... I can only now laugh about it but it took me about 2 hours to clean it up.
CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. You can enjoy it even if you don't understand it and too much can give you a headache the next day J

I'm now over half way through the original "sneaky ways" thread and not got far on this one yet but as it may be ages before I've read all the fab tips I thought I'd add mine now...so my apologies if I'm repeating anything!

My dentist gave me this one - if you use sensitive toothpaste but only have one or two sensitive teeth don't waste expensive sensitive toothpaste on all of your teeth. Brush with cheaper standard toothpaste first and then put a very small amount of sensitive toothpaste on your finger and rub into the offending tooth/teeth.
I have to say this has saved me a fortune in toothpaste as I only have one very sensitive tooth and also rubbing it directly onto the tooth is far more effective for me than when I used to brush with it :T

The other thing I've discovered is putting foil in the bottom of your grill pan (shiny side up) seems to speed up cooking time (especially for sausages) it seems like the heat reflects off of the foil and helps cook them from the other side - thus saving a few pennies on electricity as you don't need to keep the grill on for as long.
Ok so not going to save loads but combined with turning the heat off early...every little helps!

    Some great tips,thanks!

Unfortuanately I don't have a seperate grill in my cooker.Putting the grill on means putting the oven on.I really miss not having cheese on toast.
  • My own sneaky way to save pennies is to not be fooled by the pound shops, you can get lots of the same products cheaper at places like Savers or Wilkos. Eg someone a few posts up said about Stardrops being in Poundland, I got mine in Savers today for 89p.
Also some poundshop companies have such massive buying power that they can get manufacturers to make special sizes for them which are actually smaller than the regular size - not by a noticeable amount when you just glance at the bottle but when you can get 250ml of shower gel in one shop for £1.05 the poundshop might have 220ml for £1 and the bottle be almost identical, you're better off going somewhere else.

When buying meat deals in the supermarket check the weight of the packs in the offer- recent one in Sainsburys 2 for £3 some packs of sausages were 400g some were 450g.

When using spoonfuls of ground coffee etc I tap the side of the spoon to level it off a bit so I don't use as much.

Old towels get made into flannels and old pillowcases into hankies. Only saves pennies that one but gives me a warm gnat bottomed glow.

I decorated some second hand lamp shades from the CS with wooden buttons also from the CS [glued them on] for a cheap decorative touch.

Our local freecycle group organises dates on which anyone can attend where you bring along your old cds, videos, dvds to swap.

When visiting other towns we tend to use the park and ride- it's always seemed to save us money on parking.

  • I remember reading somewhere here that you can use old coffee grounds as a body cellulite cream and exfoliant.

I've started doing this and it works well.
