    Another christmassy one:

Do you have any wooden skewers left over from summer? Make sweetie kebabs i.e. one wooden skewer and thread on about 5 marshmallows (big bag ~89p), wrap in cellophane and tie top and bottom with some tape. One bag will make about 7-9 kebabs. If you don't have cellophane, then you can use clingfilm but wrap it really tightly and twist the ends tight and secure with tape. These are great home made pressies for not a lot of dosh.

  • Reminded me of what I see as standard behaviour but others may not see it as so. When throwing out old clothes...
    1 use them as dusters
2 Remove any zips and buttons

Then you will have zips and buttons to use as replacements when needed, also you can change buttons to change the look of outfits AND I can remember many happy hours playing with buttons as a kid, I know I'm THAT old.. lol

True, it's also worth buying a pair of pinking shears so that you can cut up old cloth and it won't run. This means your dusters will last much much longer. It's also worth cutting up old clothes for patching, oily rags, jam jar covers, shoe cleaning cloths etc etc etc....

Interestingly I was reading that until industrialisation started in the 19th century, there was very little market for second hand goods, simply because everything was used up until it was completely obliterated!

When you have shoes that have worn out it may be worth keeping some of the laces- by doing this we managed to replace a broken pair of OH's with some we had salvaged from a pair we disposed of at the weekend so no outlay necessary!

Haha true, but a real frugalista never has worn out shoes!

Mine are 12 years old (resoled and reheeled about five times I think, plus internal patching and relining) but I'm aiming for 42 years like Prince Charles' shoes from John Lobb...(though he has an army of valets to repair and maintain them, of course).

ps old shoelaces are useful for setting up a capillary watering system to keep your plants watered when you're away. Google to find out details...

did anyone see the programme about the history of the dustbin the other night I watched it on catch-up today and it was interesting how and why we have so much rubbish today mainly down to packaging which wasn't that usual during the 1950s plus everyone recycled almost everything in those days as rationing meant that things were in short supply. To this day i never bin a rubber band or string and can't bear to throw anything out that I could reuse or find a home for .My jam jars I use for cleaning paint brushes in with white spirit(cheaper than the propriaty paint brush cleaners) Just stand them in an old jam jar and it will dissolve off quite well then once clean I wrap the brush bit in clingfilm to keep it soft.Or I pass the jam jars on to a friend of my DDs and get soem pots of marmalade ot jam when she is making a big batch in exchange. If you put your mind to it almost anything can be reused for something else.

Don't throw away the white spirit you've cleaned paint brushes in. After removing the brush allow the white spirit to stand for a couple of weeks or so and the paint will sink to the bottom and form a jelly-like blob. Pour off the white spirit into a screw topped jar, it can be used again and again, and the blob can be removed in one by just tipping it out of the jar. You can then take this to the tip where they'll dispose of it for you.

Speaking of watches, when it comes to replacing the battery some large chain stores will replace the battery for free if you bought the watch there. Other than that the best deals for changing batteries can be in the unlikeliest of places (i.e. not jewellers), in the village where we live the small card/gift shop, toy shop and corner shop all replace batteries for between £2.50 and £4 yet the jewellers when it was here was £7.50. The nearest town is a 10 minute drive away and charge for parking and in the big shoe/watch repair place its £12.
