More tips I have are:
1) If you cook with fresh ginger freeze it and grate what you need as you go. It stays much fresher that way rather than a few days fridge life.
2) You can grow veg and fruit in just about anything e.g.
- strawberries will grow and look good out of the toe of a pair of old wellies. Just cut the top of the foot out and voila!
Grow carrots/potaotes in an old bin/ old tyres stacked up to give that retro look. Don't worry about filling it with loads of expensive compost. Fill the base with big bricks/stones/polystyrene for drainage cover with soil then just a chunk of compost int he top 1/4 - 1/3 of the container.
My OH's dad has an allotment and someone left 2 belfast sinks to be taken to a good home. We took one of them and have used it as a planter in the garden.0 -
We've just moved house. We have 4 teen daughters, which means long showers! One of the bathrooms in our house has an electric shower, the other is a bathtub shower fed hot water from the gas central heating. To make sure the girls use the cheaper hot water, hubby disconnected the hose to the electric shower and hid it!No buying unnecessary toiletries 2014. Epiphany on 4/4/14 - went into shop to buy 2 items, walked out with 17!0

For the last 20 years I have always bought shampoo and conditioner from the hairdresser due to psoriasis in my scalp. Last weekend I thought to myself lets try a hotel shampoo since I was nearly out of my normal shampoo. To my big surprise no itching or irritation. I still finish with conditioner though since I still got plent left. This will save me save money for the next few months.
I've been using the same brand of salon quality shampoo and conditioner for years and have been fearful of trying anything else (one attempt didn't leave me with as soft hair as normal). Unfortunately I'm a wee bit skint so when my housemate brought home a bottle of shampoo and conditioner that she'd bought me at 50p a bottle I thought I'd give it a go.
I've actually found if I wash my hair in the evening and leave it to dry naturally it's softer than when I used to use salon quality shampoo and conditioner but blow dry it! Am now converted to shampoo that costs about half the price and washing my hair in the evening0 -
This thread and the original Sneaky Ways to Save Some Pennies thread inspired me to write a post on my website with a whole bunch of sneaky and fun ways to save money. I included a few of the ones I found here and several others.
Has anyone here ever used the 'switcheroo trick' to save money? That's where you buy a cheap store brand and put the contents into a premium package to trick people into thinking they're eating or using the really good quality stuff? I've fooled lots of people with that trick and it's really really fun.I've done it with beer and wine very effectively several times.

Hi
Loving these tips everyone.
I use amazon for free ebooks and these have been 2 books one on using bicarbonate of soda and other for vinegar around the home for cleaning/polishing etc.. I check the list daily when free to see what new books are listed but most are slushy romance! Still, they are free and I have only paid so far for one book.
Someone had posted about the use of shampoo and doing 2 washes but using less shampoo than one wash - I use an olive soap for the first wash when hair is greasiest than normal and then you need much less shampoo for the 'actual' wash. Cleans hear very nicely.
As am on a meter, I do flush less frequently unless no.2!
When waiting for warm water to work though the pipes, I collect the cold water for watering the plants or sloshing down the loo after a no.1. Means less flushing.
In the kitchen, to avoid waste when cooking for one, I do prefer Lloyd Grossman sauces for pasta as they are so well made and full of flavour but buy when on offer. I use for pasta one night then the left over is used to flavour bulgar wheat, flavour pan cooked chicken, put over fish and grilled and makes everything taste yummy! Last resort is to freeze it but it lasts a week easily opened in the fridge as it contains less water.
I have become increasingly anti-supermarket where I spend twice as much on what is half as much food. All offers are set out for families and people who do not look at cost per 100g/unit. I do my main shop from Aldi where the quality is often much better, the fruit/veg is seasonal and much cheaper and the milk lasts longer than supermarket. My food bills are probably about half what they were and leave me more to treat myself with the odd luxury item.
Thank you for the star drops tip. I have never used it before but pick up a bottle the next time I see it.

Just working my way through the thread, im only on page 6, and have read loads of tips for dealing with pet hairs but couldn't help but pop in with an idea my mum uses for picking up pet hairs from carpets.
she uses a light mist spray bottle with water and a fragrance if you wish, and a barely damp mop, she then "mops" the carpet. not only does this help pick up the hairs, it keep the house smelling lovely tooBuild your own dreams ~ or someone will hire you to help build theirs

My local charity shop always has a little basket on the counter with new, unopened toiletries in, the sort you get in gift sets. They break them down and sell them individually for between 25p and 50p. I've just got bottles of Baylis and Harding body lotion, hand lotion, shower creme and shampoo for £1.50, and a Sanctuary exfoliator for 25p. Certainly worth looking out for0
