For those who don't like/want the skins of potatoes (I myself love them), there is no need to peel them before boiling. Peeling raw potatoes takes away some of the potato itself so you waste a bit. Instead, scrub them well, boil them in their skins and then the skins come off easily and neatly, but none of the flesh at all. There, nice smooth potatoes with no waste.

A good way to clean potatoes is to use one of those cleaners made from tiny ribbons of steel (not sure what they're called). They get the grime off really easily.

I buy Mr T value baby bath for 11p and use in a pump dispenser as handwash :D

I do this, too - BUT I add it to a foam pump dispenser (fill 1/5 with soap & the rest with water) - lasts FOREVER! :j

My best one is a tip from my late father...if you want or think you need to buy something, check in the cupboards first. It's actually quite astonishing the number of times you'll find something you've forgotten about that will do the job as well or nearly as well, with no new financial outlay required.

And he's right, Val! I recently scoured the net for some photo frames to display some family pictures in, and bookmarked quite a few on that auction site. Then went upstairs to the photo stash in the underbed drawer to sort some out and found 5 suitable frames. Saved me quite a lot of money, I'll remember this tip - every time I need something I'll have a good hunt through the house first :D

I have a nail-brush at the kitchen sink that I specifically use to scrub potatoes and carrots. It works really well.

How many ml in the bottle? I've been using ald* bubble bath at 45p a litre but will switch if this is cheaper (not keen on normal value bubble bath).

I keep a pair of those exfoliating gloves in the kitchen especially for this - they work especially brilliantly with new potatoes.

Just place the veg in a bowl of water and rub with your gloved hands - job's a good 'un. :D

  • I am pretty new to the MSE forums and am now addicted to trawling through these 'Sneaky Ways to save money' threads.

There are some absolutely marvellous tips on here.

I can add a bit of a peculiar one, but since reading this MSE forum, I am constantly looking at things and reassessing if I need something, or how I can cut back a bit!

OK....at the risk of being branded a total loon.....

When I nip to the loo during the evening, I put the landing light on, but don't bother to put on the bathroom light....I just use the light from the landing. I am sure it save a little bit of electricity!
Oh, and I never put any light on if I have to pay a visit in the middle of the night....heck, I barely even open my eyes, so certainly don't need blinding!
  • Poggy40: I appreciate that every penny's prisoner (copyright you-know-who) But considering how little normal electric bulbs consume I think you're probably saving about ten pence a year. You carry on if it pleases you but don't trip in the dark.

OMG! This was me this week! :rotfl:Know it's not much but have made vouchers/cards for part of my husbands 40th - bought plain coloured card for this but discovered had loads in my craft bag! After looking at ideas from the bag, went back to the shop and got more fitting card with the money from the stuff returned (if that makes sense!). The card that I should've bought (the shop was away to close the other day) did a much better job and I'm well chuffed!
    :j I feel I am diagonally parked in a parallel universe :j

    :D
There is plenty of light from the landing, so no fear of tripping....and in the middle of the night I am pretty much sleep walking and am on automatic pilot!
Bless you for being concerned though! :)
