Babybel wax covers with tumble dryer fluff all stuffed into a loo roll make great firelighters :D

(I have put dried satsuma peelings in there too for tonights fire - might smell nice :D I usually stuff them inside old tights or similar and pop them on the radiator - makes the room smell all fresh - I won't use chemical plug in things - they are awful)

Well, what next will inventive people come up with! :T

I don't have an open fire, but occasionally of a cold winter evening I put a citrus fruit peel (dried or not) in the middle of a gas ring on lowest, and as the peel slowly burns to a crisp it gives off a heartwarming waft... :A

I love your sig, Quasar :D

I also make Xmas pot pourri by slicing oranges very thinly, same with appes (cross ways so you get the star pattern in the middle) and drying them out in the airing cupboard (start off in the oven if it is on) add some fir cones when I fing them, and then toss with some orange essential oil (sooo cheap) and ordinary powdered cinnamon... Mmmmmmmm lovely

I collect newspapersin different languages on my day trips into london through the year; we end up at fenchurch street and just outside towerhill are a load of stands of multilingual free newspapers. then I wrap using other bits and bobs collected through the year...

    (1) I have cooked some 'normal oven only' things in my microwave just using the grill setting but placing the item on the turntable rather than the rack. Saves the single or double oven being put on!

    (2) I try to turn off my GF grill near the end of cooking cycle to save power, try too with hob when can remember

    (3) I use Supermarket carrier bags for the used kitty litter

    (4) Try to see movies via the free cinema preview codes

    (5) Use
say no to 0870 when faced with an 0870/0871/0844 number

    (6) Use Bath foam in soap dispensers

    (7) Fill up water bottles with tap water when anticipate need

    (8) Set a max price for toiletries/household stuff. i.e 10p a clothes wash

    (9) Plan meals according to grocery offers

    (10) Try to walk at least one way where the journey is about an hour on foot.

  • My first post so be gentle ! I've been using stardrops, soda crystals, vinegar and other tips for a few months now so thank you all for that.:T

My own ways of saving are - I cycle or walk anywhere within reason and put the money I would have used in fuel in my 'thrifty tin' - so far this summer I have over £80!

Now that I'm using the wood burner, which has a flat top surface, I heat water in big pans and use it for washing up and pour into electric kettle for drinks. I also heat water for cooking veg or pasta on there too.

I always place a bucket under the shower while the water is heating up and use to flush the loo, not always of course!!

Last but not least - I've stopped buying ready meals and make most things from scratch now. I retired in April so I'm getting used to a much lower level of income so needs must as they say.
Thank you all again for the tips.
  • I cut the ribbons from the inside shoulders of tops and jumpers and use it in card making. I sell my cards for £1 a time, so this little bit of thrift gives me a very good return.

    Bella.
Yep i do this can`t bear it when i see it hanging out of ladies tops yuck it`s meant just for holding clothes on the hanger in the shop when stuff get roughed up and moved around a lot,:rotfl:
  • I make my own firelighters. I get friends to save thier old bits of candle wax and add them to bits we have, put them in a big pot over a low heat and slowly melt down. I scrunch newspaper into egg boxes and then pour over the melted wax. Once they have cooled and hardened you just snap off what you need, one or two light a great fire.
If you only have a wee bit of wax sprinkle it on top of lots of scrunched up newspsper in your fire (or scrunched up junk mail) and add on wee bits of coal, light the paper and the wax helps the fire take off.
Friends are always more than happy to save the wax for me as it helps them recycle.:j

I have LOTS of clothes. Good ones, fleeces and padde jackets for the winter, good jumpers and stuff. Since I live alone in a small flat and there are no cupboards to speak of, it always looked like there were 6 people living here! So I was going through everything with a view to getting rid of a substantial lot and giving it to the charity shop, when I saw in Poundstretcher lots of vacuum bags. I bought 2 just to try them and boy, do they save space! They squeeze stuff to about a third (or more) of the volume. So I went back and bought more and now I have three time the amount of stuff in the wardrobe, and in the single tiny cupboard.

Bottom line: many good garments have been retained and they will do me next winter. :)

I found this one today: before you put the tea in the tea caddy, lay it on a piece of paper and roll it with a bottle or rolling pin as this will break the dried leaves slightly and release the flavour more fully, so you need a little less in the pot. No idea if it works but sound well worth a try.

A word of warning! I have never been able to re-use these bags successfully. They always fill with air once emptied after the first time. I do store out-of-season clothes in them at the top of my wardrobe by squashing them all in at the same time before the air has a chance to fully fill the bags.
