I've done the same with home made mincemeat, JackieO. As long as the seal is ok and the lid hasn't popped, I'll use it.
We've just had beans on toast for lunch, sshhhh, don't tell DH they were dated last July! We went off Heinzzz as they seemed to have lost their flavour, but a tiny bit of grated cheese helped. I didn't want to just bin them, so we made do.

I hate food waste as much as anyone and I have certainly eaten out of date canned food before, but I think it is a better policy to keep an eye on dates and practice stock rotation. I have an emergency prep which I check to make sure I eat and replace anything with a short date. When I clean my kitchen cupboards I check the dates while everything is out. Anything with a short date is placed at the front and I make a mental note to include it in my meal planning. I do the same when I clean at Mum's house and let her know so she can incorporate anything in her meals
I can't imagine having so much food in the house that I overlook something for years. In another thread, someone said they had so much food in the house that they has no space to buy anything else to make use of a money savings voucher.
I'm not criticising anyone just saying how I manage at home.7 -
My grandma made mince pies all year round. She would always give us some to take back to college. They never lasted long. She made lovely rough puff pastry.7

I find a bit of chilli powder or smoked paprika helps jazz up disappointing baked beansworking on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?9 -
Have just bought a push mower. Our garden is pretty big and the electric mower uses about 9 kilowatts to cut the whole thing . The push mower was £53 . I usually do 3 goes at the electric mower to get the whole thing done. Im nearly finished the lawn with 2 goes at the push mower. So probably it is taking a bit longer but its about £3 saved each complete lawn chopping so should take this season to pay for the new mower and then it is saving money. Its me Culpepper LOL couldn't sign in with the old ID so time for a fresh start....7

London_1 said:I have been using up as much surplus stuff as I can and only buying literally what's essential. its surprising what you can find tucked away and forgotten in the food cupboards.
I had a surplus bit of pastry made last October and frozen at the back of my freezer, I then found I had a out-of -date jar of Robertsons Mincemeat (very out of date December 2017 !) but I made a pie last week, and it was fine and no ill effects whatsoever.
I think I actually bought it in early January of 2017 as it was in the after Christmas sell off stuff, and it only cost me 50p anyway , and I had forgotten about it as it was on the top shelf at the back
But once I opened it and gave it a good sniff and it tasted Ok I thought well why notso a nice mincemeat pie with a good dollop of HM custard on top did four puddings last week, and a slice or two with a cuppa.
OK so its a Christmas thing to normally eat, but I figured as long as its eaten and not binned its been used up. I washed out the jar and gave it to a friend who makes her own jams so at some poit as I save the empty jam jars I will no doubt get a jar returned filled with soem HM jam or marmalade win-win
Foraging in my food cupboards and finding forgotten tins and giving them the sniff test is definitely saving some pennies here and there
JackieO xx
Not "lost" or "forgotten" at the back of a shelf but stored exactly where I put them
I open them a day or 2 before I intend to use them just to check they are OK - no problem so far -
and then add at least 2 tablespoons of BRANDY (give a good stir) to "revive" them and ensure their moistness and give them a lift

Quoia what a great bargain My jar was on the top shelf right at the back and only being 5'3" if stuff get stored there they are often forgotten by me
the pie was delicious though and I'm glad it got used up.
I have a lot of small jars of jams that I was given in a gift set at Chistmas by one of my granddaughters and I shall use the different flavours up in jam tartsOne I noticed was an orange one with vodka in
( best not give them to any little ones
)
I make some for the little girls next door as their Mum is on her own and works three jobs to keep a roof over their heads so I often when baking make a few extra cakes or tarts for them.:)
I sometimes add a slurp of sweet chilli sauce to baked beans to whizz them up a little as well

I used to make a harlequin jam tart to use up all the oddments of jam. Lovely with custard.
The cake stall on the market was selling bread pudding today which has inspired me to make one for pudding tomorrow. There's some leftover bread in the freezer.8 -
