Brie, my BIL buys us seeds/seed potatoes as a Christmas present. Fab present.A few years ago, my neighbour was chucking out plant pots - after a trip to a garden centre - they came my way.Another year, I had too many strawberry plants (babies), I traded them with another neighbour for more pots.2025 Fashion on a ration 0/66 coupons

George Anderson on the Beechgrove garden (Scottish tv) is the tv master of recycling plastic! He makes mini greenhouses from plastic food containers with a hinge or tapes two together. He also uses yogurt pots and makes his own little cold frame from flag stones up on their edge with a plastic sheet on the top.2025 Fashion on the ration

DH has built raised beds with wood scavenged, with permission, left over from building work - where we live was all bungalows but most of them have been turned into 4/5 bedroom houses and there's always building work going on. Last year we saw a shower screen, along with the rest of the bathroom, in the front garden of a house up the road which is now on top of one of the raised beds to make a cold frame.5

Broomstick said:I'm not sure this has been mentioned on old style before but, if you or any of your household are students and shop at the Co-op, it's worth looking into getting a Totum (or Totum Pro) card - used to be called an NUS card. 'Students' include those at college/university full and part-time (including the Open University apparently) as well as some on shorter courses. A Totum card gives you 10% off at the Co-op. There are heaps more other discounts but nothing I would use since I don't really buy much apart from food! The card paid for itself really quickly once I started using mine at our local Co-op.Surviving the ups and downs of life with DH

Sallygirl said:A couple of days ago a friend gave me two beetroot she had grown, complete with leaves. Fabulous! I chopped up the leaves with a couple of leaves from a cabbage and from a cauliflower and we had that for the veg for our dinner. It tastes just like spinach which I love. I will have the beetroot for my my lunch today as my husband does not like it. His loss and my gain : ) I will cook it in the microwave just like potato. My point is to think about the extra bits like the cauli leaves and see if it can go into a meal somewhere or maybe soup. I try very hard not to throw things. Now a gainfully employed bassist again - WooHoo!7

Today's news on Ukraine will undoubtedly mean that efforts to save pennies will be overwhelmed by massive increases in the price of oil, gas and petrol.
I would expect that most of us will start to feel the impact immediately. These increased costs will doubtless rapidly be reflected in the price of every item we have to buy in the shops5
