Think that you have a good point there Uniscots97.
Must admit it's easier to take water to the bedroom, so that I don't have to go downstairs to get some in the middle of the night. The tap water is not suitable for drinking.

I reuse a water bottle refill from 2 litre smartprice bottle or the filter jug another option would be to use one of those mugs that keep drinks hot but in this case would keep your water dust and bug free
My dog wouldn't drink from his bowl one morning I couldn't work out why till I picked the bowl up and saw silverfish floating ewww don't blame him our tap water tastes of bleach some days worse than others

Just checking that you're not putting it back into the freezer after it has already thawed once?

No, we get all our meat in fresh as OH is a chef so gets trade discount; then I batch cook everything on a weekend as we've got free electric then so its all only frozen once

Should have been clearer sorry, put back int he sense of reserved for another meal not returned to freezer so no food poisoning worries there :)

A really good tip for gardeners I picked up recently: use a disposable nappy instead of water crystal gel.

Each year I always seem to be looking for water-retaining crystals for my hanging baskets in Poundland, Poundstretcher etc with variable luck. Baby's nappies contain the same product, so go ahead and get one nice and soggy with water - saturate as far as possible - then break the membranes to release the gel. You can always break the membranes of a dry nappy but that gives a messier result (gel bits everywhere just waiting to absorb moisture from the air). There is loads of gel in each, and it's relatively easy to scab one or two from the parent of a young child as they keep supplies everywhere!

Hope is not a strategy :D...A child is for life, not just 18 years....Don't get me started on the NHS, because you won't win...I love chaz-ing!

Ooooh, that is interesting, as I have about half a dozen nappies left over from grand daughter's last stay.
Do you remove the gel bits and mix in with the soil, or can you put the nappy at the base of your planter. I've got some trough planters to plant up fairly soon, and usually line them with plastic to retain water, and wondering if the nappies would do the trick instead, or as well?
  • Just had to throw away some VERY old spices - any tips to prevent this in future by using them for something else?

Also - how do I change my avatar please?

I would remove the gel carefully to leave the nappy membrane intact and use that separately as a liner if you wish. Certainly the inner membrane, because nappies are remarkably good at keeping babies' bums dry, so used as is will probably leach all the moisture out of your plants!

Just personal preference, as I like to mix the crystals in with the soil rather than have a reservoir.
