Carrier bags are much rarer in my house now that they cost money to buy in N.Ireland! They started out at 5p, but now seem to have crept up to 20p in some places. Which I don't mind as it's more incentive to remember to bring bags with me. Only thing is I use them in my bin, but some places like butchers and takeaways still provide them free of charge so I try to get them that way.

I keep cereal packet bags in the drawer for one-time food uses that might otherwise ask for a "ziplock bag" or the like. Marinating raw meat, crushing biscuits etc. They're handy as sandwich bags too.

Snap. I buy a pack of 100 plastic bags off Amazon for £2. At the local Car Boot sale recently there was a man selling packs of them too so stocked up there as well:o

1st sneaky way to save pennies from me :D

This is great if you paint your nails and want a change from the usual shiny finish without buying a matte polish or topcoat or if you have a favourite colour you want to mattify.

Just paint your nails as normal and then before the final coat is dry, hold them over/in gentle steam (I usually use a pan of simmering water on the hob).

I discovered this accidentally whilst trying to be a typical woman and multi-task cooking my dinner with painting my nails! :rotfl:

Down here in S Ireland, the cost per plastic bag can really add up (esp if you forget to bring them every week :o). I now load my boot up with 3 - 4 boxes, do most of my shopping in Aldi, wheel trolley out and load directly into boot, easier to remember to put boxes back into car when you're constantly tripping over them in kitchen :rotfl:,

I used to spend more than I care to admit on facial cleansers. I started reading /r/skincareaddiction on reddit. These people look at real science for skin care, not the bs science adverts use and which makes Ben Goldacre's skin crawl! I now use cheap baby oil for cleansing! The oil cleansing method is popular in Asian cultures. I wipe the oil away with a microfibre flannel (3 for £1 from poundland). I then moisturise my face at night with aqueous cream and if my skin is really dry I put petroleum jelly over the top. I have always been plagued by acne, and whilst my skin is not perfect it is better than it has ever been.

I found an article in the daily mail which you can read in 'goodness direct 'website, click on 'super simple healthy eating hacks'. Don't peel your potatoes, they have more nutrition unpeeled and you don't need to throw bits of them away, just trim eyes and any bad bits. MSE and healthy. Some other tips on there too, too much to write down !
Still virtually alcohol free since 4/1/15. (10 Xmas/ New Year/Birthday drinks)
It takes 3500 calories to lose a pound in weight. Target 13 lbs weight loss. 18.5lbs lost 2nd May - 28 September.
  • Thanks Caroc, I've started leaving the skins on potatoes (although mainly though laziness!) and they do taste nicer too

Saw a tip today for cooking pasta faster and using less fuel simply by putting the pasta in the pan with cold water. It didn't say how long to cook for and I'll have to try it to find out.
