Those acursed moles...

I too bought all the expensive things and MY moles apparently used the sonic repellant as a Hi Fi!! They actually started going TOWARDS it.
However I now have a cheap, effective and easy remedy (certainly easier than the 'simply put some lion dung in your garden to keep out the cats' one).
Open a hole into a couple of their tunnels (as many as you can really) and put in some dog fur! NO - you don't need to find a dead dog..... just groom your own or go to a dog stripper (?!) and ask for some - they are usually delighted to get rid of their trash!
Works a treat!

Our garden - third of an acre - is covered in the bloody things. I think they come across from a field next door but one, through neighbour's garden into ours. We did try mole traps, by one of those strange old men that has been mentioned, but nothing. An aunt from Norfolk said that windmills stuck in the ground are supposed to work - so may give that a go. Also, another "strange old man" advised that ferret poo stuck down one of their mounds puts them off, and he just happened to have a bucketload. I did tell our neighbour, but whilst he was doing this he slipped, landed on a sawn off tree trunk and cracked his ribs. And, I don't think it worked either! Think I'll resort to trying out the windmills - off to the seaside to buy some!0

Hi there,
Funnily we were looking at moles in lawns on my RHS course only last week, so it is still in my mind and I think I can advise reliably.
Firstly, the general view is that the sonic deterrent is effective, and humane, but how you use it matters. In the middle of the lawn may not be the right thing to do to start off.
I presume you can drive the mole away to the back of your garden, or it might go to the sides? Anyway, assuming we try and move it past the back fence, and your garden is nice and narrow, the sonic deterrent is effective to cover the whole width of the garden so you only need the one sonic device to get rid of your mole.
So, start with the deterrent by placing it in the middle of the width of your garden, starting day 1 from the house / patio end.
Then every few days, move the deterrent down the garden by a few metres. The mole will always want to get away from it, so should move away - hopefully to the back of the garden. So keep moving the sonic deterrent until you get to the back of the garden.
The only trouble may be if the mole moves sideways but the person who suggested planting child's windmills in the ground is also correct, because the vibrations of the windmill in the ground irritate the moles. So you could once you've moved the sonic deterrent to the back of the garden slowly, back it up with child windmills every 5 metres apart, say, at the borders. But don't place the windmills in front of the sonic deterrent in the direction you are pushing the mole toward the back, or he might get confused and make a dash past your sonic deterrent back towards the house to get away from the windmills!
Other than that, if you know there is a mole nearby in a run / hole, an unofficial deterrent (not RHS approved) is to drop a smoking rag into the hole near the mole. They don't like that....
I liked the idea of the dog fur in the runs. If that works, no harm in trying, you could add that to your armoury.
Once you think you've chased the critter off, you need to keep up the deterrent though or he might be back. Hey, he may have been pushed off one of your neighbours gardens into yours, so someone else might push him back toward you one day!
One final word of warning. Should for any reason you come face to face with the mole, don't try to pick it up. They have razer-like claws that will shred your hands - how else would they cut through the soil?!
Good luck!!0 -
Live and let live I say.
We have molehills all over our garden at the moment, but some years they completely disappear. My two little girls and I were sat in the garden a couple of years ago when a mole ran right in front of us - picked it up and placed it back in its hole. Point is this was a beautiful creature which if completely eradicated would be lost forever - if your livelihood is threatened thats one thing, if it purely for aesthetics then embrace.
Remember use the molehills as compost or ground bait for fishing ....
Only lived in this house 6 years - sure they were here before me ....0 -
I was going to suggest mole smokes - a poisonous fumigation - but I've got a feeling you can't get them any more.
Just get yourself some mole traps - they work well.0 -
Hi there , hope someone can help we have just discovered we have moles at the bottom of the garden
If anyone has dealt with this I would appreciate your advice as we don't want to use traps but would like them to move on before they take over the garden!
many thanks in advance0 -
One idea is that you should locate the mole's run by drawing a line between two mole hills, dig down until you find the run, then insert the movement from a musical birthday card. It seems moles detest noise and will all abscond to your neighbours' garden. Another method is to place a number of children's toy windmills around the garden so the sticks are embedded in the mole runs. As the wind turns the windmills, it sets up vibrations which the moles dislike.Get some gorm.0

Your thread will be better placed in the 'Greenfingered' board, so I'll move it across.
