Just as the title says - our garden keeps being turned over by moles!!! …why do I get a strange feeling comedians will be attracted to this thread….
    Send them over to me.

My garden could do with a good turning over.:p :D
  • Don't mean to be the bad guy but my dad has some mole traps that I believe kill them but certainly do work. You place them in a few of the molehills and voila.
If I had words to make a day for you,
I'd sing you a morning golden and new.
I would make this day last for all time,
Give you a night deep with moonshine.
  • Slightly off topic...but one April fools day I made large mud piles all over our garden and told my husband we had moles...it was hilarious!!!! :rotfl:
    Sorry for your problem though!!:o
I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)

Mole traps are very effective if used properly. Dig between 'hills' and find the tunnel then place the trap so the mole triggers it when scuttling along. You have to ensure the trap is covered well so that no daylight can get through. If the law is still the same as when I used to use them, you have to check the trap every 24 hours. Although I never got a 'live' one, they are quite humane (as animal traps go !).
You can also get 'Mole Smoke' now which is also supposed to be very good at driving the mole away.
Light blue touchpaper and stand well back !

ask a local farmer to recommend a mole man. Usually strange old blokes who are very skilled at catching moles and bopping them on the head etc

My OH traps the moles he gets in his garden. Come to think of it he is a strange old bloke at times.

You can soak a pine cone in creosote and pushing into the run, stem down. They doen't like the smell and they can't push it out.

  • Great, no moles in Ireland. At last some good gardening news for me - we plan to move over there in two years:D

My uncle had a terrible time with moles and I have to agree they can make a lawn look like a battlefield. He used a few of the traps shown in Lord_Gardener's article. They worked a treat. Took about six months to stop / eradicate the problem but not had any problems in the ten years since.

Not very humane I know, but each to their own...
  • Check out Jasper Carrott's answer to the problem:

  • Make lives of the moles unpleasant, remove the soil from the holes (use as compost) then direct hose jet into the hole to open it out. Lawn will then have holes rather than hills. Then find highest hole and put hose into it and fill it with water. Do this whenever new hills appear. This will force the mole to move house. Eventually he'll get hacked off and move away to someone else for an easier life.
