Good Afternoon guys.
Hope you're all well.
Sober 10 days now, and while facing the debt situation is highly stressful, I do feel quietly calm and a bit more positive and focused (rare for me)
My clear head can probably be attributed, in part, to staying away from the booze
Had a lovely walk, along the river, to the CAB last Wednesday, and the lady there was friendly, approachable, professional, and very helpful.
We agreed that a 'Debt Relief Order', will probably be the best course of action.
However, I'm now in a tricky situation..
My Girlfriend has offered to pay off the Money Shop debt of £500, and seeing as I've already told the CAB about said debt, this will be deemed as 'showing preferential treatment to one creditor, over another'. Nightmare!
Even though it'll be seen as a 'third party' paying off the debt (apparently, insolvency law, only legislates against someone paying off 'one debt over another' themselves, so it'd be ok if someone else pays it), the Official Receiver would still look into it. Then, there is the possibility of the DRO being revoked :-/
I've been advised on another debt forum, (by someone who used to work at another CAB, and who is a qualified debt advisor) that the best thing would be for my Girlfriend to pay off the Money Shop debt, in cash at the branch (not even letting the cheques go through my Alliance & Leicester account) and then any risk of being pursued for fraud, would disappear.
Then, instead of going through the CAB, to go through a different debt charity for the DRO.
I'm obviously over the moon, that my Girlfriend has offered to pay off the Money Shop payday loan debt.
However, I have to be really careful, as I don't want to lose the option of going for a DRO at a later date.
Both Npower (for the Electric arrears of £635), and my Water company (£225 - Suspended CCJ, dependant on me keeping to a payment arrangement of £45 a month, from July 10th - I can't afford this..) are now putting on the pressure.
There is the option of agreeing to a 'Direct Payment from my ESA' with NPower. They want £15.30 a week though, and I won't be able to afford this, and eat, and keep on top of my other bills.
Jeepers, debt really is stressful isn't it?
What is tough to get my head around, is the fact that 99% of my debt is due to my having wasted so much money on booze..
However, I'm trying to look forwards, and make positive changes now, instead of dwelling on the past
I'm really in two minds as to whether or not, to go for a DRO, as I don't want to lose my A&L bank account (it's the first, 'proper' account I've had in years), and also, I want to get back into full time paid work asap too.
At least, my head is clear, so I'm able to think this through anyway.
Sorry to witter on about debt on this board.
Look like I'm going to head on over to the Debt Free Wannabe board!
Cheers,

Sim - I can't advice re fraud etc but perhaps you should try to get out of this situation on your own and not increase your debt to you GF if that is in anyway possible. Well done for keeping clear head and getting organised

Thanks for offering to score sparkles, could I have no target, ta xxxx
Sim, I'm with Marru, I think you should try to pay the debt back yourself and as kind as the offer is, don't accept any help from your girlfriend as the relationship has been volatile in the past and I think its best to keep money issues separate. Well done on 10 days xxxxDFW Nerd no. 496 - Proud to be dealing with my debts!!0 -
Sim...off out now to Leeds...simple...DO NOT PAY OFF MONEYSHOP. The dro will free you from your debts in a year. If you pay it (however you do it...g/f or 3rd party) the official receiver will see it's been paid & think 'hmmm ....whats this then'...(?!!).
If your lovely supportive g/f has £500 to lend/give then have a few days holiday-use it for that!
DO NOT PAY THEM OFF....
Lecture over..& it'll soon be over for you in a week or so!
FORGET A&L bank a/c...its toast after dro...stick with co-op!0 -

Thanks Marru.
You're spot on regarding how I should clear this debt on my own, and not increase my debt to my Girlfriend.
I've been in two minds about this for a while, and I said to her last week, that I wasn't comfortable, with her lending me any more money.
I'm in a bit of a corner though, at the moment, and there is no way I can raise £500 by next week, in order to repay The Money Shop.
Am going to take my time, in thinking this through over the next week.0
