its not illegal to travel in your maiden name if you are married. lots of women do it to save money or like me CBA. and women who have quite good jobs/travel a lot with work tend not to change their name at all to avoid confusion.

Thats what the passport office told me, its illegal to travel in a name that you are not legally known by.

Dunno who you spoke to in the Passport Office, kindof, but loads of people don't change theirs straight away. It's not a name you are not legally known by because it still IS your name - but so is your married name if you want it to be. I only changed mine because I wanted to get my new visa (from being married) in my married name as well otherwise I'd have to carry around my marriage cert whenever I travelled *rolleyes*.

Not sure what's on the cards today. Prolly going to Mothercare to get a car seat fitted...DH will have to conviscate my wallet to stop from buying anything else!

KOAG, a passport is a legal document, so if you have a passport in that name you're by definition legally known by it IYSWIM :)

Well I have two emails from them where they confirm what they told me?

I thought they were right cos surely it makes sense, if you legal name is now Mrs Smith then surely all your legal documents should be Mrs Smith?

Anyhoo I havent thought about it much since I asked them two years ago cos we are waiting till we are debt free (about 6 years) then are going to save for our wedding (cos I want a big white wedding cos its something Ive always wanted, and I know you dont have to spend loads of money on a wedding and I dont plan on spending loads but I want the venue, the dress etc etc, I dont think I am explaining it well lol)

Elliot has fallen asleep while we are watching Michael Buble from sunday night lol dont know if he got bored with him, or if his lovely voice soothed him to sleep lol

ETA SS no I am getting so confused lol, so yes you have a passport in maiden name which is a legal doc, but then you also have a marriage cert with married name which is a legal docutment, and I was told you cant have two legal documents with different names on as you can only legally be called one thing (whether that be determined by the birth cert, deed poll, marriage cert which all superseed each other)

The marriage cert shows your maiden name KOAG, it doesn't have your married name on it. It's proof that you are now entitled to be known as Mrs/Ms HisLastName or YourLastName-Hislastname, but it isn't an automatic name change in itself.

Mine says that Dr Spun married Mr Husband. We're now both known as Spun-Husband (IYSWIM), but that name doesn't appear on the certificate anywhere. So while I can take the certificate into my bank or to the passport office and say, Hello, my new name is Dr Spun-Husband, I can also say, My new name is Dr Husband, or I want my marital status changed to "married" but I'm still going to be known as Dr Spun.

    Clear as mud? :D

You can call yourself anything you like but certain people (like the passport office and national insurance) require you to provide evidence that a certain thing is your name. If I had wanted to change my name to Susan C but hadn't got married I would have needed to change it by deed poll in order to get evidence that I had changed my name. The deed poll would be legal "proof" of my name. However because I got married I just needed to show my marriage certificate because it is fairly standard for a woman to take her husband's name on marriage. It doesn't show that my name is Susan C but I decided to change it to that because I got married and the certificate is considered acceptable because it is fairly standard to change your name in that way and it proves you have good reason.

(BIL and SIL did what SS did and they both had to change their names by deed poll after they got married because it was non-standard.)

Hiya, sorry I've not caught up yet, but had a cool idea that might be helpful to others with hols planning..

we've got a 1 litre corsa, and were thinking of just hiring a car for holidays as it's cheaper than going to a bigger car for just 6 ish trips a year.

We're going to my parents for half term week, and so we contacted an independant baby shop near them about hiring things for a week. It seemed on the phone like it was £10 for a buggy, £10 for a high chair...

So we asked if they'd do some kind of bundle deal, and they've happily said we can have a moses basket, travel cot, high chair and buggy for £25 for the half term week, saturday to saturday.

So that's a lot better than hiring a big car methinks? :money::)

I'm watching a totally legit copy of the first Sex and the City movie... apparently every problem in the WORLD is down in some way to miscommunicating or not communicating or somehow doing it wrong.

    Maybe they have a point.
