Leftover bread

Th Italians have loads of recipes for things to do with left over slightly stale bread as they use little or no salt in their bread so it doesn't last. So a good google of italian and leftover bread should produce results.
You can soak bread in milk and squeeze out before adding to mince to bulk out meatballs, burgers or meatloaf. Make your own bread sauce to go with roast chicken - it's easy, you don't need to use a packet. In fact I'm so fond of the stuffing and bread sauce I have been known to just make those bits to eat cold on a sandwich.0 -
I save the ends in the freezer until I have enough for this:

I replace the mixed peel with dried apricots and chocolate chips and it is yum!
I find that halving the recipe makes about 6 portions, and it is lovely served with custard, ice cream or even just plain yoghurt
I've even had it for breakfast on occasion!!
And such a frugal recipe using your leftover bread and only a handful of other ingredients :T0 -
The loaf of wholemeal bread I made this afternoon! the crust is like concrete and inside its so dense I should give the recipe to GCHQ, no way could spy devices get through that!
I made it to go with a lovely beef stew (that's my specialty btw and its gorgeous!).
my first thought was to hide it in the bin - and make dumplings instead - but I am out of Suet! so that bu99ers that!
ideas please for turning this disaster into delicious! If anyone can do it you lot can!:)OH will be in around 8.30 expecting a delish filling supper!

Oh no! what a disappointment
Is there anyway that you can hack it into slices/pieces and pour the casserole over the top to soften it up a bit??
Coat it in butter and grated garlic and leave in a warm place - might soften it enough to make passable garlic bread?:heartpuls The best things in life aren't things :heartpuls

You don't need suet, dumplings can be made with any fat you have, butter marg and I've never tried but probably oil.0

Ive tasted the inside and although its very heavy - it actually tastes like I remember Hovis tasting when I was a girl!
Would it be worth making croutons with the insides do you think?
Thanks anakat - got plenty of butter and oil so will have a go at dumplings as a 'back up'! Would it be ok to grate the butter in cold from the fridge?0 -
Mix the bread with egg yolk and a little flour, then make your dumplings with it, lush....
Specially crusty ones done in the ovenmake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

I am going to make the dumplings - but in the interests of economy will use lard not butter.
I think I will go with Kazwookies suggestion of bread and butter pudding! have plenty of milk and eggs and sultanas.
So that's tomorrows tea sorted then as well!
The bread seemed such a disaster my mind went blank on me!
Thanks guys - I knew I could rely on you!0 -
