  • Been pretty good today. Used up all the carrots and potatoes in both my slow cookers. One contains beef stew and one has some sort of invented sausage, bean and spud hotpot.

But I have half a loaf of wholemeal bread and i have no idea what to do with it. We don't like bread and butter pudding and the only other thing I could think to do is whizz it up for breadcrumbs. But I can see I wont end up using them.

Loathe to throw it away (as always!) so any other inspiration??

I make breadcrumbs to use in stuffing or to top macaroni cheese. What about bread pudding? That's different from bread and butter pudding. It's more cakey. Or summer pudding, where you line a pudding basin with slices of bread, fill with stewed berries, put a slice of bread on top like a lid, then weigh it down with a saucer/teaplate and chill for a few hours.

I've merged this with a leftover bread thread (thats hard to say! )

What to do with breadcrumbs may give you some more inspiration as well

it will keep - you can always eat it as bread in a day or two? Or freeze it sliced and toast from frozen?

    :)

  • Thanks.

Alas though it's been frozen already. Will have a look at this thread from beginning see what I can find.

    CRISPY FRUIT SLICES
    Have a hot oven ready.
Butter each slice of bread on both sides and put on a flat baking tray.
Cover with slices of apples, plums, pears or whatever fresh fruit you have.
Sprinkle with demerra sugar (and if you have some, a coating of ground almonds)
Bake in the hot oven for 20 - 30 minutes until crispy brown.

Delicious with cream or Greek yoghurt and saves all the bother of having to make pastry for a fruity type tart.

(You can also use stale French bread for this, Cut the slices diagonally to make them a little bigger).

Not sure if it would freeze but it's worth trying a small experimental batch. It would never last long enough in our house as it's delicious eaten hot straight from the oven.
  • Just an update to let you know what I did with it.

    I made treacle tarts!!
