Poor old Hamish. It's really gotta hurt. His BTL portfolio is going down in value at an alarming rate of knots. And when interest rates do shoot up it's all going to go POP. Not pretty but fair dues to him for putting a brave face on his anguish,0

I don`t know if Hamish Has a btl port folio. I do know that I have , in my larger family, a lot of kids that are having a hard time when it comes to housing. I have one, who has committed to a rather large mortgage. However the rest are living at home as they are not high earners.
It`s OK to say that the average wage is 20,000 a year. However many are on a much lower level. As a business man, I draw a fairly low wage at the moment.
This government came in after Thatcher. Her who destroyed council housing. A fair and decent deal. Sold off at a low rate. The local councils were not allowed to use the sell off money, as I recall, to build other places.
Regardless what others say on this forum, to buy your own place in many areas is down right dangerous. With an economy that we have suffered over the last 10 years, I have no idea where it is going. Who would have thought that IRs would be so low? Um, not a lot.
Labour has not been the party of decent housing despite the promises of not letting the housing problem get out of control.0 -

You know the score Hamish, around £20k so that all those on minimum wage can afford them. Also that's not for a starter flat, that should be for a 4 bed detached house.0 -
I will answer as Hamish has a valid point. OK, if you live in certain parts of the country I admit that a starter flat would be affordable. For example South Wales. There it would be very affordable on a low combined salary or indeed one decent one. Commuting to work would be likely.
Also there are places in the North of England where the above would apply.
I am considering the higher regions. The South East springs to mind and I am sure that Hamish would agree with me in saying it IS far more difficult for youngsters there.
The South West also is a place in point where larger salaries are scarce and yet house prices run second to the South East.0 -
