Can I save any more money?!

Hey! Guess what! My tumble drier packed up last week - sort of enforced money saving!
I have saved on phone, internet, walking more (not that i always took the bus anyhow) doing the grocery challenge, little things like washing some clothes less - yes a sniff to see if they are still ok - eugh- the things us parents do! Future saving will occur whan all my veggies and fruit grow in the garden. I will have to add it all up. In fact I was going to do a new up to date budget to see how things are going, but then events yesterday evening left me in a rare miserable mood so i couldn't do it!Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

as well as putting an old dry towel in, I THINK things dry quicker in ours if I put it on for 40 minutes, then another 40 minutes. And I THINK it is cheaper too, because the heat is only on for 20 minutes, but it's still warm after 40 minutes.
It's a bit of a faff doing it that way, but I do it when I want to dry something which shouldn't really be tumble dried. If I leave it on for 80 minutes (which is the minimum I find I need all in one go), everything gets quite hot and stays hot for 60 minutes, then cools down. Whereas if I do 40 minutes x 2, things don't get quite as hot, so they don't lose their shape or shrink or melt.
someone at my uni reackons if you leave 15 minutes between two "runs" of it instead of doing two "runs" one after the other (I dont know how long her runs are, it lasts for 5 mins for every 20p you put in) the air stays warm in the 15 minutes pause and helps dry the clothes more. Except then you risk someone just dumping all yuor stuff on the floor as they think it's not in use
I just hang all mine on a clothes rack anywya.0 -
oh, and regarding the night shifts etc, and placements, they wouldn't start straight away (working as a doctor definitely wouldnt and I know the med school here doesn't do placements in the first years). But I agree it would certainly be a problem later on.0

Sorry to hear of the death of your tumble drier, Sarah. The door handle on ours broke ages ago so you can only open it with the handle of a teaspoon stuck in the door.
But it made me wonder if you have thought about saving a teensy amount from your economies? And I thought a Credit Union might be the way to do it, because then if you had a crisis and needed a small loan, you'd be able to get it through them at a reasonable rate of interest. That's if you have a local one.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

I even have two wells in my garden, I had thought about reopening them to see if that was a viable option, but it seems hellishly complicated.
If you have a water butt in your garden (for watering home grown veggies) write to the water board and ask for a discount on your bill. You pay a percentage for water supply and a percentage for sewerage. We get 15% off our bill as I told them that we divert water that would otherwise go to the drains. Not sure if all water boards will give discount but it's worth a try!

I feel like the interview went well but I wont know for a few days yet. Also thought it will save me money if I work because I won't have to heat the house in the daytime, or use cooking appliances, apart from the slow cooker! so if i work i will have a smaller utility bill!Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:
