  • I to am having a problem cancelling my Gymophobics membership and like one of the other posts was certainly not made aware that I was signing a credit agreement - fully accept that with hindsight I should have asked to take the form away and read it but the Manager was chattering away and in my opinion distracting me from being able to sit and read the document, certainly didn't feel as if I could take the form and go back at a later date. My fault I should have.

I did enjoy going but if I am being honest I didn't see any benefit weight wise, that said the reason I stopped going was out of my control, a change in personal circumstances meant it was difficult to go for a while but I thought his would sort itself out and was happy to just miss a few weeks attending, however circumstances got worse in that I lost my Mother suddenly which hit me and my family pretty bad and due to other family commitments my health suffered and I basically could not face going to Gymophobics or anywhere else for that matter. Without going into great detail I am not in a position to go back, mentally or financially - I just can't afford it but they are writing me letters asking for money even though I have written to them with details of my change in circumstances - last one was for £210 which, if I can't afford £30 per month then I have no chance of paying. This is just not helping my situation and making me feel very anxious

All in all not a good experience and certainly would not recommend the place to anyone, how can they get away with it?! They were quick enough to say how marvellous and caring they were to the local press and Lord Mayor when they opened, I wonder how the local press and Lord Mayor would feel if they knew the stress they were causing people.?!

  • I've been attending Gymophobics in Southport for a few years now and lost three dress sizes and two stone, I do attend minimum five times a week but it fits in with the school run only 30 mins. Initially you don't sweat but as your programmes progress they get harder and cardio can be added in. They do boot camps and cardio classes. The instructors in Southport are amazing and very knowledgeable and always going away on training courses. Seems the minority are quick to judge and moan. All gyms that offer direct debit or 12 month memberships paying upfront work the same, once paid if you don't use it that's your decision, if due to illness your GP will give you a medical note just send it to them. Gymophobics will suspend free your membership if your having difficulty getting there. But rule no.1 always read the small print or ask questions before agreeing.

    Well I'm convinced.
  • I've had a nightmare with them too. At no stage when I joined was it ever explained that monthly fee was as part of credit agreement. And , yes I should have read the contract BUT I would have thought that any responsible business would point this out very clearly. From my experience there are some quite vulnerable people who attend and don't think for one minute I'm the only person who has been caught in this trap.
