  • So does anyone have any positive experiences of this place? My wife signed up in the last few weeks and though she's enjoying it I'm not convinced from what she said that there is any more benefit to this than cycling to work-10 min each way. I just hate to think that there are plenty of ladies out there who are forking out and only really getting a social club.

IF she enjoys it then i dont see the harm.
    however looking at their site
Gymophobics 30 minute figure improvement programme called Resisted Tension™ (the first exercise programme in the UK to be awarded a Trademark) offers an excellent alternative to conventional workouts. That’s why it attracts people of all ages and does not require you to be fit to achieve serious weight loss and figure improvement.

Not only is RT far easier than other workouts, it won’t make you sweat. Working out in a conventional gym involves a lot of sweating but not necessarily much fat burning. Did you know that if you run as fast as you can nonstop on a treadmill for an hour you will have lost LESS than a quarter of a pound of fat.

RT is very different and is designed to turn your body into a fat burning machine. By combining Isometric exercise with the Gymophobics circuit, muscles are toned far more effectively and you will burn far more calories (even when you are sleeping). This combined with a healthy eating plan means the resulting weight loss can be very dramatic with most ladies losing a dress size in the first few weeks.

sounds like a load of 8ollocks
  • Hi guys, I have been a member of Gymophobics since April 2011. I didn't join to lose weight but to lose a dress size (or two). Like Flynn20 I was given the same introduction, shown the machines but not tried them, however on my first appointment I was given guidance by an instructor in my air pressure settings, appropriate seat settings & what each machine was going to do for me. After 10 wks I was waiting to be approached for my re-assesment. After 16wks I was still waiting, so I approached them to be told 'oh yeh you need to make an appointment'. Due to a 6wk break (lost my mojo) I was told i needed to wait another 10wks and basically start all over again. As it was my fault I stopped going for a while, so I agreed. I made the appointment a week before my holidays & had lost an inch! Not motivated by this, I asked them to reassess my machine settings which they did. It turns out the gym instructor who initially gave me my induction had not instructed me correctly!!
I was quickly put on the right track (no mention of rembursing the money already spent!) and lo and behold 6 wks later I had lost 5 inches! another 6 wks later and a total of 7ins lost. This loss is from all over my body, arms thighs, waist etc. I am still in the same size clothes although my jeans are very loose.
Now my dilemma is ......is this because of Gymophobics or my lifestyle (I lost my job, had father in ICU & cut down on my food). My sister lost a stone and a half whilst going to Gymophobics but also was on a diet. The gym took all the credit!! Of course you are going to eat differently when you start a gym!
I have since stopped going to the gym and still paying as my contract doesn't end until next April. I believe if your not using the facitlities you shouldn't have to pay, but I can understand why they have to do it.
I don't know anything about a finance loan as I too pay by direct debit, this wasn't mentioned but I will go and have a look!

I signed a contract for a monthly membership there for £36 a month. I read the contracts through, and read that if I cancelled, it would be three months of membership, and if I fell 2 months behind, then it would be cancelled.

So I lost my job, and my dad picked up the fees, transferring the money into my account each month to cover the fee. He missed Jan and Feb because I stopped going and went to a proper gym. So they sent me the fee. I expected 5 months of fees, the missed 2 months and the 3 month cancellation, which would have been £180. Debit Finance Collection sent me a letter saying I owed them £318.

Now I can't find a copy of the contract, unsure if they gave me one, and this has been 2 or 3 months, and I've been unable to chase it up because I've been studying for A-Levels. I don't know how I will afford £318, and it seems to be out of line.

So in summary, Gymophobics lie about their results, lie in their contracts, and try to overcharge you at every corner. And now I have no clue what to do, as I can't afford the cancellation.

I have no advice for your case, just a warning- avoid gymophobics like the plague.

At my one, there were no showers. Their answer was "you don't even sweat, its a great work out!"

Ask them for a breakdown of the £318?

What age are you btw (i ask due to your a-level comment and that contracts with someone under the age of 18 generally are not enforceable).
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

I think you've mistyped the last word, you probably meant 'please', you may want to edit your post to get a better response ;)
