I tried to disable the likes of TomTom from startup, but every time i reboot it is still coming back, im at a loss how to disable it from returning. I know you are right, and Ideally the only apps I want to be running on startup are virus scan and ad aware, the rest need not be there and do irritate me when they reappear. I actually uninstalled thoosje completely, but the darn thing is still popping up here n there ;)

IE I dont generally use, although auto updates insist on using IE, but it generally runs as slow. Am I doing something wrong with the startups, because I have tried to remove the apps?

I would be also interested to know what apps are showing in task manager that I can safely disable without crashing xp. Or indeed any that look erroneous (dodgy)

Any advice on which unessential apps running in background, and how to safely disable them from recurring after a reboot would be gratefully received.

Thanks for your patience over this, (I know I am slowly losing mine ;))

Will try again to download the portable firefox, unfortunately it is during downloading when the problem occurs the most, ergo that is when my system grinds resulting in a time out feature.

Nice one closed mate, firefox portable works a dream, granted there was no addons but it booted up no problem, and it so far hasnt locked up the laptop, so I can now narrow it down to firefox, I can rule out a fresh install as I have already done this, So I need to work out what in "firefox" is causing the memory to "fill up" to the point of locking the system, will keep you updated in how I get on.

You should be able to disable startup by using hijackthis or autoruns, if it doesn't work, there may be an associated service running too (which should also show up in hjt/autoruns)

You can also create different hardware profiles with all services, or cut down services running, via a menu at boot (control panel, system, hardware, hardware profiles)

You could just export bookmarks and import into firefox portable, and (if you must), reinstall add-ons one by one

Ad-aware is a bit bloaty really, a good virus scanner does the same job.

Lost track of what you have running now, but these looked possibilities to chop after your first log

    adaware, epson monitoring apps,arcsoft, affinergyservice, jqs,lightscribe, nbservice, tomtom, winpcap,googledesktop,Reader_sl.exe, AdobeARM.exe, Thoosje Sidebar.exe,spybot,mdm + IE addons/ocx's

Deleting those should get your commit charge after a fresh boot down to 120-150MB approx (pre firefox), which should speed up the boot process and machine generally, if it takes longer than 60 seconds, there's room for improvement.

in firefox, about:config, add a new boolean called config.trim_on_minimize set to true, this will cut down firefox's memory hogging when you click minimize, you can see the effect in task manager, processes.

You can create a new firefox profile (completely wipes out the old one, but sometimes its needed to fix firefox problems)
