Try updating the NET FRAMEWORK via microsoft updates (Assuming it works manually)

Just wanted to update you, that after a whole day of cleaning n updating files, updating the Framework seems to have solved the auto update.

I have also been liaising with Microsoft Tech, after looking into it, they think my pc is infected with a virus and advised me of the following
Please try these troubleshooting steps. If you have further concerns or questions, please let me know:

    1. Download the file TDSSKiller.zip from the following link and save it on the Desktop.

    http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.zip

    2. Double click TDSSKiller.zip to unzip the file.
    3. Double click TDSSKiller.exe to scan the system.
    3. Wait for the scan and disinfection process to complete.

However this download also failed, but offered no reasons for failure or error reports. I thought I would add this in case you can shed light on it.

Furthermore I should add that Firefox does seem to run a little more stable once it has loaded, but the issue of loading Firefox still remains, and the auto update is still failing on these updates........
After reviewing the information you delivered, I found that the updates KB979683, KB980469 and KB981432 failed to be installed.

Ok I have re-installed firefox to the latest version, i noted that downloading and installing takes a noticeably longer time than normal (in everything), I suspect something is hidden in the system, that upto now have not managed to find, the next level will soon be reinstalling XP at this rate ;)

Ok, this helped with the standard bootup procedure a little, but I am still having the same issue with Firefox, taking 5 minutes to boot it, and occasionally it locks up resulting in a ctrl alt del (which is also locked up) after a few minutes it bursts back to life in spurts, opening task manager for me, allowing me to close firefox.

For some reason Firefox seems to constantly increase the pc memory up until it locks up the computer with too much demand or memory. (this is what it appears to be doing).
