If the insurance pay, all the future insurance customers pay in increased premiums.
(and what's the betting ryanair include an "insurance" surcharge shortly)

What about all the premiums theyve taken and havent had to pay out till NOW..time to cough up

For the record I was due to fly back from Venice on the 15th had to spend extra week off work, daughter off school,Goverment should be getting the stick NOT airlines

Oh dear. I am not up on the legislation and have just got back to the UK after 10 days. I am not sure who should be paying what, and I am just glad to be home. We were with easyjet, who I always thought were on a bit of a par with ryanair, but my new experience tells me that this is not the case. There is a lot to be desired about easyjet's customer service on the phone, but we were assured that our hotel would be covered as well as reasonable food expenses, while they sorted us a flight, which they did. At the same time DOL was basically saying "tough !!!!!!, we will pay for nothing, and find your own way home". Although I am not sure that the airlines SHOULD pay for this, his statement was bound to wind the public up. Don't sell penny flights if you can't fly them. salxxx
  • I was stuck for an extra 7 days and am in the process of putting a claim in. When I get to the total amount of compensation i wonder if i could give them a number of ways to pay me and a list of charges eg
give me money back by credit card £20 charge
give me money back by debit card £10 charge
give me money back by cheque £25 charge
give me back money by cash No charge but must be given to me on a Sunday between 1pm-2pm otherwise £20 charge
    :D:D

I've no objection to UK carriers getting some *reasonable* financial assistance via EU funding that will, in part, come from the debt burdened pocket of UK Govt / UK taxpayer.

I've every objection to a foreign carrier getting any financial assistance via EU funding that in any part comes from the debt-burdened pocket of the UK Govt / UK taxpayer.

Shame about Ryanair having to go cap in hand to the Dublin government, then.

(The legal costs involved in mounting a persuasive argument for compensation may be a bit on the high side. However, unlike the average family flying Ryanair, Michael O'Leary should at least be able to draw upon just a little of his £300 million personal fortune to help sort things out.)

PS: *reasonable* compensation for carriers will, one trusts, be determined by exactly the same methodology used by carriers to decide what should * reasonably* be paid out to passengers under the duty-of-care obligation.

... because we were informed that Ryanair will pay sod all, we didn't keep the receipts over the 8 extra days. Then we spent an extra £900 on one way return flights with Bmibaby that ended up as useless an hour later when the CAA forced a U-turn and our original Ryanair flight (that we were told was cancelled) flew after all!
I spent over 4 hours trying to talk to someone at Bmibaby over 2 days (no e-mail address in use)... premium rate 62p a minute calls. Eventually Indian call centre told me flights cannot be refunded and I would have to turn up in person to Palma airport if I wanted to change the date on the flight (by which time family back in UK!).
So I've been shafted all ways by this and am left about £2000 out of pocket...

Same here doshunta ! They truly shafted us too ! Supposed to be home after one week on the 19th...and after a half-hour call to their only contact in UK, were told earliest poss flight would be in May !!!!! And we would have to find that ourselves coz they couldnt be bothered to get stranded people on their next available flight or offer any help with accommodation or food ! Like you, we were forced to desperately phone and scour the over-burdened internet for the 1st available flight home with another carrier(monarch) at a hugely inflated cost of £800 one-way for the following week(which is what our return fare was with Ryanair for 4...NOT £10-£40 like they claim!). Same thing as you happened.....suddenly, Ryanair put in an extra flight 5 days after our cancelled one and we are forced to take that and lose £800 with Monarch who do not answer ANY calls or e-mails !!! We are VERY, VERY out of pocket and were left very much 'on our own' by Ryanair as were you and countless others. Ryanair= a very dishonourable company and one I will NEVER use again !

Sorry to hear about the appalling Ryanair experiences above, and how much O'Leary's shambolic shamrock airline has cost people.

Lessons will be learned from this: if you use Ryanair and ANYTHING at all goes wrong, expect a big bill. And Ryanair won't give a damn. They never do.

its not just ryanair that are doing this so far only 4 airlines have come out and said they will pay. KLM keep telling us we need to wait until an EU Commission meeting next week. What a cheek.

My son was another one caught out by the Ryanair stance "we're not paying" . They were due to fly home from Marrakesh on 16th April and were told they'd be no flight available for them until 25th at the earliest so they made their own way home overground. Later that week Ryanair backed down and said they would pay but too late for them. Plus their insurers Endsleigh won't pay either.
