12.05pm: Ginny McGrath writes from Heathrow: Passengers who are arriving on transfer flights whose onward connection has been cancelled cannot retreive their luggage. Jean arrived at 5am this morning with her husband on a United Airlines flight. Her onward connection with Bmi to Dublin has been cancelled and she has been told that she cannot fly until Sunday. She has also been told that she can't get her luggage back yet. "We're going to get a taxi to a nearby hotel then come back tomorrow to get our luggage so we can try to get the ferry over to Ireland," she said. "But I don't know if we will be able to get our bags back. They've given us a few basics including a toothbrush that's almost taken my gums off."

Noon: Bmi says excess baggage charges on short haul routes will be waived today. On long haul routes, baggage allowances will be increased today for checked-in bags.

If you need insulin, then I am imagining that 'verified' means a letter from your doctor. If this is hard to get, perhaps the receptionist at the surgery can do one for you. I hope all goes well.

    Flight Update

    http://travel.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,10295-2306784,00.html

British Airways says that passengers due to travel today or tomorrow who do not wish to travel can either rebook up until December 1, 2006 or obtain a refund. Many passengers whose flights are cancelled can use the airline's Manage my booking on its website to change or refund the booking.

BMI says passengers due to fly today can either obtain a refund or re-book with no change fee for outbound travel on or before 24 August 2006 subject to availability in the same cabin as originally booked.

EasyJet is offering full refunds to passengers due to fly out today or the opportunity to rebook at a later date. It has not specified a deadline for rebooking.

Ryanair flights, particularly those from Stansted, may obtain a full refund for unused flights or may rebook on flights up to August 24 free of charge.

Air France passengers will be rebooked on the first available flight in the same class. If there are no seats available in the same class, passengers can rebook for travel within one month.

I'm going out to Dublin again at the end of the month, hopefully it will have all died down by then!

    Latest from Ryanair:

13:00hrs: Flight Cancellations - UK Security Alert
Next information will be at 15:30hrs

    1. Some of our first wave flights departing from London Stansted airport have still not departed and are suffering 6hr plus delays. However, at 1200hrs, 33 of our 40 first wave departures had departed from London Stansted. Delays at Stansted are being exacerbated by aircraft congestion on the ramp and security delays in the terminal (see below hand baggage restrictions*).

Due to these ongoing security delays, we are have been forced to cancel some afternoon flights from London Stansted and further cancellations may occur later today and will be advised, via this website. See below list of cancelled flights.

    2. Flights from London Luton Airport are also suffering severe delays which may lead to flight cancellations later today.

    3. Flights at other UK Airports have experienced delays, but the evening departures are expected to operate on schedule.

    5. Flights between non UK airports are now suffering delays due to the aircraft being delayed on earlier flights operating into Stansted Airport.

6 However, given the backlog of passengers at UK airports further delays and cancellation are inevitable.

Customers booked on flights operating in or out of the UK today may rebook free of charge, using the web link below. Flights can be changed, via this link up to the 11/08/2006. Customers can rebook to travel on flights, subject to availability, up to the 24/08/2006.

Click here to rebook your flights on line.

Customers who are booked on any of the below cancelled who do not wish to travel on a future flight can claim a full refund on the unused flight(s) please click on the link below and enter the required details. Refunds will be processed in 7 working days back to the form of payment used to pay for the booking.

Ryanair apologises for any inconvenience caused by these flight delays and cancellations arising from the UK security alert.

*Hand Baggage Restrictions for all flights departing from the UK

The UK Government has advised UK airports that no items of passenger hand baggage may be carried on board any departing flight from any UK airport. This instruction applies to all airlines operating from UK airports.

Passengers are not permitted to carry the following onboard:

Handbaggage, including ladies handbags, electrical or battery powered items including laptops, mobile phones, ipods, electrial key fobs.

The only items permitted to be carried onboard are the following items:

Travel Documents (passport), Keys (but no electrical key fobs), baby food, milk, sanitary items and prescribed medicines (except in liquid form unless verified as authentic) essential for the duration of the flight.

I'm so fed up... Went to Stansted this morning to get my 9.55 Ryanair flight to Leipzig...I knew there were problems about halfway through the train journey, and once I got there I was told it was cancelled, so I came home and tried to rebook. No tickets left for the flight tomorrow, and for Saturday there were tickets available but I couldn't get through the process on the website as the server was too busy. After trying about 100 times with no success now all the saturday tickets are gone. So I want to change to go next weekend, again the website too busy. Called the 0871 number (which is supposed to be a reservations line), and there was just a LONG recorded message (at 10p a minute!) with no option to talk to a real person. They read out another phone number to call starting with 00313 I think... but I couldn't find a pen in time. Now I've tried the number again about 20 times and each time there is either an 'engaged' tone, or various BT messages that the person at the other end has hung up.

Doubly annoying we've just moved into a new place and broadband isn't up and running yet, so we're on dialup, so can't try the web and phone at the same time... DOH!

scooper - its funny, for me it has made me more confident in flying since I feel more happy that the police/whoever can get the job done to foil the attempts! Hope you get a nice holiday wherever you decide to go.
  • Scooper,

Its all about risk, if you decide to hol in Britain, and drive I'm afraid theres more chances of copping it on the roads than flying.
