I'm waiting for the program about single dads who contribute neither money or their presence to their offspring. That would make good viewing !0 -
There have been times when I'be gone to my local co-op to buy a few things. Bread, milk, eggs etc. cos I know if I go to the supemarket I'll buy things I don't need. At my local co-op they have very limited stock and it's all the branded stuff. The only bread you can normally buy is hovis. So it's cheaper to actually pay a bit more for these things than risk spending on stuff I don't need in a supermarket.
I watched the program and found it quite saddening at some points cos of how they have to manage on so little. However I noticed that in many of the videos both girls were smoking. Now a night out 4 times a year I think is possibly necessary, especially if they can get someone to mind the kids for free. And the girl had started buying christmas presents for her kids in february as she knew it was the only way she could get things. But when they have £35 for groceries/ non grocery items and bloody everything else where does fag money fit into that?0 -
Right then, time for my defence....Edinburghlass wrote:You obviously missed the bit in the shop where she said she couldn't afford to shop there I obviously missed the bit where the designer labels of the clothes they wore were hanging out
You obviously missed the majority of my post, especially the bit where I said that she brought the coat. OH WAIT, I DIDN'T SAY SHE BROUGHT IT! If you read my post again, you will find that I DID NOT say she brought the £90 coat. What I did say was that she was moaning that she couldn't afford it!!!! I then implied that she should stop moaning becuse neither could I afford a £90 coat and I work my !!!!!! off for a good wage.**purplemoon** wrote:So you're saying that you earn £40k a year between you and can't afford to buy a decent loaf of bread or box of cornflakes??? Don't make me laugh lol
I'm glad that my situation gave you a laugh! I could afford branded bread if I wanted it, but I choose to make the sacrafice (hence being on a moneysaving forum) because the savings on branded food are better off paying off debts!
In the same way, this girl would have been better off buying value and own brand food and using the savings to buy the items she really does need instead of moaning about it! Oh wait a minute, I forgot, there is no reason for her to worry about saving up for stuff in this "want it now" society, she can just get an interest free loan off the social.... how wonderful!astonsmummy wrote:If you cant afford to buy branded cereals on a combined income of £40k then u must be going wrong somewhere...£20k pa is double what i get for me and DS so basically u get 3 times more money than me and r complaining?
On the contrary, I am not going wrong anywhere so please don't make assumptions and i'm certainly not complaining...
I choose not to buy branded food / clothes because in my opinion I can't afford them because I have debts which need paying off first. Thats what I hate about society now, people accept debt as a way of life and don't care so carry on spending what they can't afford because they would rather have branded food than pay off their debts quicker.
I hate being in debt (mortgage accepted) and won't relax until i'm not!
Oh and one more thing....... did I see both those young girls smoking..... bet thats a costly habbit!!

From what I have read on here that does appear to be the exception, not the rule. Of course, I am only going on what I have read on here.
I have noticed that the HA I work for has started renting properties that are considerably more expensive that your 'average' council property, which surprises me as we are in the business of social housing. Apparently it is because there is such a shortage of council properties, associations have to rent privately. This means the rental costs increase, which in turn get passed on to the tenant. I must admit, I did assume that HB picked up the extra, but obviously not.
However, having had time to think about it, at least one of the girls was in temporary accomodation, so yes her housing costs could well have been that high. A fuller explanation would still have been useful, but then the programme did gloss over an awful lot, as Channel 4 are wont to do! :rotfl:0 -

You got yourself in debt so it's your problem if most off your £40k joint income is taken up paying for it.
As far as intrest free loans go, for alot of people they are the only way they can afford to get things like stuff for the home etc, oh and it all gets payed back, taken out of the benefits before u get it so u cant get in debt.
Or would u prefer they go to provident, and end up paying out lots of money and leaving them short??
who said she had other debts anyway?
First u say u cant afford branded stuff, now u say you choose not to buy them. make ur mind up luv :j Baby boy Number 2, arrived 12th April 2009!:j0 -

No doubt these girls would be in debt too for the coat they liked should someone actually allow them to have credit.
Morpheus your righteous arguement about tackling debt seems hollow to me, as I can't seem to justify why you ought to be in debt in the first place. Then again, I don't see why anyone should be in debt other than through their own stupidity unless there's a very good reason like their kids needed an operation in American and had to borrow £20,000 or a relationship splits up and one has to borrow for the interim until finaces are reviewed/benefits started, or business falls apart etc etc.
It also seems ironic, Morpehus what is it you say? "I forgot, there is no reason for her to worry about saving up for stuff in this "want it now" society" Errrr you're in debt right? I'd bet this months salary that at least a proportion of your debt was from frivolous spending.0 -
