This weekend been quite busy cutting the grass, strimming edges etc (always makes the garden look tidy!!) - got lots of things growing in the mini-greenhouse still a bit cold at night to put them out yet (toms, aubergines, peppers) but the veggie patch is coming on a treat - spring cabbages hearting up, sprouting broc, loads of lettuce, blossom on the apple tree, even the raspberries have grown like mad! I've even had time to sow some seeds of calendula and marigolds (campanion planting).
I've got a new kitten and its the first couple of times shes been in the garden on her own and so its a good excuse to be out there with her - although as I was kneeling over planting she thought it funny to be climbing on my back!!!
2010 has got to be better than the last two years!! :rotfl:

Weight loss to date: 3 Stone & 5lbs!! Weight loss this week: 2 lbs !!:j

    Hi all
Was very pleased that nothing died over the cold BH weekend while we were away. The runner & french beans and tomatoes got brought in just in case, I haven't put the tomatoes out again as it has been getting close to 0 outside in the greenhouse overnight. Plus they are in 6" pots now and it is such a pain carrying them in and out! DH refuses to help anymore!
The sweet peas and runner beans that i risked planting out also seem fine. The beans in pots are yet again going mental. I don't know what I'm doign wrong (or right!), mum and I both planted french beans at the same time, mine are about 6in tall and leggy, hers are about 1in... Oh well i think they should be OK once out in the garden.

genius - ahh, your kitten sounds cute. We're hoping to get a couple of cats soon and one thing I'm dreading is them using my veg patch as a toilet... think I might have to make them their own little raised bed to dig regularly to try and keep them out of the rest of the garden. Of course, there's woods right at the end of the garden, but sods law they won't fancy squatting there...

Nice to see so many people contributing here. My first real year growing, live in Berks. Last year some pak choi I put in the garden didn't do too well, but decided different tactics this year.

There was 1 raised bed when we moved in, I put another one in in Feb. In one bed (which doesn't get much sun) I've got Garlic in which seems to be doing very well.

In the other bed, I've got

    Onions
    Leeks
    Parsnips
    Spinnach

In several tubs and pots there are:

    Maris Pipers
    Charlottes
    Strawberries
    Broad beens

    Still in the greenhouse
    Tumbling Tom - bush tomatoes
    Super Chilli - Chili plants
    Cucumbers

We also have a Herb bed after I convinced my wife to have a go with a spot that didn't have anything in it, and gets lots of sun. In there is:

    Mint
    Rosemary
    Apple Mint
    Chives and Garlic Chives
    Oregano
    Thyme
    Fennel
and a few other bits I can't remember the name of.

Looking forward to reading other tips in here.

i have frost forecast for monday night, you all might want to check your local weather. I'm sick of this winter.
  • Im in West London in a tiny patio garden determined to grow as much as possible in grow bags and containers!

Not done anything today apart from ventilating the greenhouse and eating a few leaves of lettuce! (too chilly!)

Tomorrow I need to plant some more aubergines seeds as my first batch failed! :(

I have a greenhouse overflowing with veg and bedding plants!
3 x Tomato plants (although one is looking a little unhappy)
2 x courgettes getting really huge!
    loads of mini sweetcorn seedlings
    2 x tiny cucumbers
    spring onions
    carrots
............and a massive array of bedding/hanging basket plants which i MUST sort out tomorrow!

    In the garden already
    Red Onions
    Potatoes
Mange tout peas (already out in pots inthe garden growing up bamboo sticks)
Loads of strawberries! making me smile every time I go into the garden as there are dozens of flowers!
Cat grass for my house cats!

Its my first year of growing veg in the garden! I think i'm doing well so far and only lost a few dodgy looking french beans which I am having another go at this weekend!:p

Oh and I spotted my first pair of blue tits this week! My months of feeding city pigeons has finally paid off and the little ones are getting a meal too!

Love this site as it is scattered with loads of advise!
