£5 glass of wine

Country Houses and weddings - they do seem to charge the earth for their booze. I went to a wedding a couple of years ago and had a similar experience in that when the complimentary stuff ran out our table decided the easiest thing would just be to put a tenner in each and buy more of the same stuff (not brilliant but OK) - and that was £23 a bottle too! "We thought it was just the house plonk?" We said !"It is" they said in reply  We couldn't believe it.
It's been a major deciding factor as to where we are holding our wedding. We found a place that we both loved - but the bar was really expensive so we ruled it out.
On the flip side - I recently went into a real ale pub on the outskirts of a very smart town and got a pint of real ale, pint of cider and a pack of peanuts for £3.66 - got to say I did a double take. Will visit the place again!0 -
climbgirl wrote:Worst I can remember in recent history is paying £19 for two vodka/lemonades in a club (again, in central London). Even I found that horrific though!
   OH MY GOD!
I can imagine myself at the bar and being told:
"That'll be nineteen pounds please Ms LookingAhead".
"Sorry nine pounds you say?"
"No nineteen pounds please"

Reminds me of time at a Best Western Hotel. Strange man came up to me at bar whilst ordering and asked me what I thought of the place. As usual told him the truth including good and bad. Barman said price for my drinks and stranger declared himself as the hotel manager, thanked me for my honest opinion and said the drinks were on the house. (About £14).
Later that evening saw said same hotel manager in bar and asked him if he would like a drink. Thanked me and ordered a single malt whisky at £26!!!!! Couldn't fault him - never went back.0 -
I'm actually wishing the wine I was drinking last night had cost £5 per glass - perhaps then I wouldn't have drunk so much of it..... :embarasse"I wasn't wrong, I just wasn't right enough.":smileyhea97800072589250

Having worked in central London, I'm sorry to say that these kind of prices are very nomal - £5 for a glass of wine, £3.50-£4 for a bottle of beer, £4-6 for vodka or jd and a mixer. The trick is to go to "cheap" pubs and restaurants like the Weatherspoons pubs.
Have to admit that I've often carried a bottle of vodka in my handbag.....and you wonder why girlies go to the loo in two's?;)0 -
I paid £7.70 for a single measure of grand marnier, no mixer, just ice on Monday, at private members club on adam street off the strand in london. I couldn't believe it. Was there for work so couldn't launch into a rant about the ridiculous price so had to pay up  I could have bought half a bottle for that!!!! GrrrOfficial Debt Free Wannabe Nerd Club member 095! Hi freebird!
I know what you are saying...however my immediate reaction is "But it's not normal...."
It's daylight robbery. A blatant rip off.
I'd just refuse to go out drinking if I lived in London...it's bad enough where I am as far as trying to save money is concerned.
I'd have to tell the pubs & bars of London to shove their beverages up their bottoms I'm afraid.....Bank Balance: In the black for the moment.

I would expect to pay £4.50-£5 for a large (250ml) glass of wine in a Central London bar or hotel - I just tend only to drink in such places when it's a work night out and one of the directors has got a tab on
... I go to theatres and concert halls a lot and rarely decide to buy crap wine at the extortionate prices the in-house bars charge, but the worst example of this was when I was at the Wigmore Hall (classical music venue) and asked for a large glass of white wine - I was charged £8!!!!! To be fair, it was much nicer than usual theatre-bar-standard wine, but £8! ... On the other hand, I did once find myself in the Chequer Mead arts centre in East Grinstead, where I paid £1.65 for a standard glass of the house plonk
... Never come across such decent value before or since!

It's difficult, if you are a guest, to comment on prices as this could possibly offend the hosts - who were probably unaware of the bar prices when they booked the venue.
Some venues do, sneakily, operate a separate, and often higher. pricing policy for private functions - after all they have a captive audience. Just bite your tongue and vote with your feet - they are obviously not interested in your future business!I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser.
