consultant31 wrote: »The misuse of foods thing looks at snacks in the following way:
Once you start to eat anything as a snack you're adding calories to your daily consumption. If you eat properly (ie: eat enough at each meal) then ideally you shouldn't need to snack! In the case of chickpeas, we're talking about roughly 300 cals a can. As the basis of a meal that's quite low, but as a snack between meals it's really quite high.
In the case of tinned fruit - the reason it has a syn value (with or without the juice) is that it's processed, making it soft and very easy to eat. You don't get the fibre as you would from the whole fruit (including skin) and it doesn't take as long to eat (giving your brain time to recognise when you've had enough).
Rotisserie chicken - some supermarkets admit to injecting the birds with extra oil (you may have noticed they are always juicy). It's a quick and easy lunch to buy a ready-cooked chicken joint to eat with salad, and it wouldn't cause a problem, weight wise, as long as it was just that, but given an inch, many people take a mile and think it's fine to pick at a whole chicken a day as a snack..........don't think I'm exaggerating - I have members who've done just that.
Hi consultant I understand what SW construes as being misuse and the reasons for it. My post was just giving my thoughts on it, I'm certainly not advocating that people follow my approach but rather just understand the way its perceived as being misuse and then making up their own minds accordingly. As I say rotisserie chickens and tinned fruit don't feature very much in my diet so perhaps that explains my attitude towards it, as I would probably be more concerned if I had/wanted them all the time. I'm not in denial about the possibility of the chickens being injected/basted but I feel if I have it occassionally and remove the skin I am happy to count it as free. I understand why others chose to syn it though.
I do see your point with different Consultants giving out different advice (it's one of my pet hates) and your Consultant's stock answer may not be satisfactory to you, but the science behind the plans is complicated (it's all to do with satiety) and really shouldn't worry a member. All any of us really need to know is that, followed 100% it works - always!
Hope that helps. I don't want to come across as being a 'know-all' so I'll shut up if you prefer
I know most members probably don't care/worry but for those that do then I feel the consultant should be adequately educated about the plan in order to respond. And as SW provide training etc I don't see why this should pose a problem? I have to say though I don't agree that knowing the plan works is all anyone ever needs to know. Food optomising in the past (green/red days) taught me so much about nutrition and food combining and made me think about what I was eating and why. To me thats conducive to an eating plan as a way of life rather than a diet, which is why I had the same enthusiasm to understand the EE plan so being palmed of by my consultant in such a patronising way was really frustrating in that respect. Arghhhhhhh I know as I type I'm sounding quite negative and really I don't mean to be. I actually like my class, now that I have no expectations from it and just go along for the weigh in and the banter. I just feel it should be more than it is, as not everyone has access to forums like this for advice, support and information in addition to the classes. Anyway I'm going to bow out for a wee while, I don't think my ramblings are benefiting anyone let alone myself:o:rotfl::starmod:C'est la vie:starmod:0 -

Hi all
gemsmember - I like Slimming World because I do not have to count calories which I hate.
However, I have also had to accept that to lose weight I cannot eat all day, everyday however free anything may be.
I'm another one who can easily eat when I'm not hungry and not stop when I'm full so I have to set myself a three meals a day plus fruit and yogurt rule or I would not get anywhere (not that I've got very far recently anyway!).
I have seen it said that Slimming World encourages overeating and I know I have to be wary of this and be realistic.
Anyway, my pasta bake thingy was nice. I made up a Quorn mince mix (onion, bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes) and mixed it with some cooked pasta.
This is the topping I used: 150 ml low fat natural yogurt, 1 egg and 2 oz cheese mixed together and baked for @30 mins. I don't like Quark, fromage frais toppings as they aren't cheesey enough but I like this one.
Today (green) I've had:
B: noodles (yes, lazy!) 2 satsumas.
L: Lentil and carrot soup (2) and 2xtoast (2heb) ans 2 tsp marg (4). Banana.
T: this will be quorn cottage pie (cheese on top Hea) and salad (tblsp salad cream 2).
Skimmed milk (Hea) and fruit and yogurt.

Oooh blimey I've missed a convo and half here :P
All I know is... I lost 2lb! And that was with having some of my OH's gooooorgeous crumble (def not SW! But he made me up a dinky little ramkin dish so that I wouldn't go overboard) on top of my rhubarb the other day and had a G&T and a red wine last night! So pleased. Greens the way to go for me! Wooo! Was so worried the extra HE would go against me!:staradminHuuuuuuge thank you hugs to all posters:staradmin0 -
I think we are all going to differ in our views, if we don't eat a lot we will lose weight, if we want to eat more than our bodies want/need - even if is is classed as free foods - we won't lose any or not much.
I have been successful to a certain extent on SW (been going on and off for years), but have now come to the conclusion that I need a more restricted regime. I am not unintelligent and do know what I should and shouldn't eat, but just need some more regulated guidelines to give me some light at the end of the tunnel.
If it is working for you, then good, but for me it isn't working, so I am trying something different.
I also have problems because of certain medication - i.e. I can't eat eggs or prawns(well not many - high cholestrol ) and I can't eat grapefruit (statin tablets) and I am sure that my metabolism has slowed down because of some of the tablets.0 -
Hi, has anybody tried the EAT. soups before, I discovered them today and if there are not too many syns its a lovely thing to have out on a shopping day.
Please can anybody help me out with the synage of them (google brings me nothing!)?
I had the EAT. PHO SOUP CHICKEN with Vietnamese noodle broth.
I have to say it would gorgeous and filling, not cheap at £5 but the carton was enormous ... about 900g I think.
The nutritional info per 100g is:-
Energy 38kcal, Protein 4g, Carbs 4.2g (1.1 of which sugars), fat 0.6g (0.1 of which sats), fibre 0.4g and sale 0.5g.
Ingrediants were veg stock, chicken, egg noodles, beansprouts, carrot, chinese leaf, fish sauce, ginger puree, spring onion, spinach, bok choi, lemongrass, lime juice, chilli, corander, garlic, veg oil, mint and lime.
I am really hoping it is low in syns as I am a bit fed up of spudulike lunches when I go shopping!
Thank you!0 -
Sounds really nice felicity! Just I guess wondering how much oil is in there but I cant see there being much, if I were to make noodle soup I wouldnt - thees nothing worse than the oil slick bubbles that can sit on the top of chinese soups:beer: Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most?
