yes yes i know a split boot will fail but what i want to know is on what basis are they failing the cv joint because after 20 years as a technician i have never known a cv joint to fail an mot
also having done more than 12k miles kwik fit will not cover it
well im guessing the boot split/came loose so the fail is the boot but the CV is goosed
most likely poorluy fitting boot0 -
can i just ask on what basis has the cv joint failed the mot
i cant remember ever hearing of a cv joint failing the mot
the warranty will be 12 months or 12k miles0 -
Why should a cv joint not fail an mot. It is a testable item and some do fail (excessive wear in cv joint) from my experience of working in a factors.
because a cv joint is not a safety critical item
have seen them advised on an mot but never failed,
also on what ground do you fail it excess wear? clunking ?
would it cause a safety issue? no just loss of drive0 -
The normal failure is for the boot as this allows muck in to damage the CV joint. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

1. With the vehicle in neutral gear, rotate the wheels when they are on each lock in turn, and check visually the gaiters of the outer constant velocity joints while the pleats are expanded.
1. a. an outer constant velocity joint gaiter missing, split or insecurely mounted to its housing
b. a drive shaft constant velocity joint excessively worn or insecure
c. a drive shaft coupling excessively worn or insecure
d. a drive shaft flexible rubber or fabric coupling unit severely cracked or breaking up
e. a drive shaft flexible rubber or fabric coupling softened by oil contamination, insecure or fouling any other part of the vehicle0 -
The CV boot was split and there was excess movement in the CV joint. This is the 3rd time I've had a car fail an MOT due to this exact same problem.1st Aim = Pay off Virgin CC - £3929.110

Doesn't matter what Kwik Fit say - the law says it should last a reasonable period up to 6 years. The law doesn't say 12000 miles or 12 months. If there is a dispute then either get in touch with Kwik Fit customer service or the area manager (I had an issue with Kwik Fit once and the area manager sorted it within minutes). If they know you know your rights they'll be less inclined to fob you off.
Also option of a letter to Kwik Fit giving them a period of time to put it right or you'll go elsewhere to have the work done and look to them for the cost (i.e. small claims court).
Thanks for that. My BIL who work for Renault Services told me it it should have lasted at least 3-4 years so I knew it should have in theory last longer but I didn't know if it was covered by anything legal.1st Aim = Pay off Virgin CC - £3929.110 -

the problem is all garages parts suppliers and manufacturers only give a 12month 12000 mile warranty.
also for a cv joint to fail an mot it must have been knocking its nuts off when driving.
one more is it the same mot station failng all your previous cv joints if it is it sounds a bit fishy to me0 -
