For most people it doesn't matter if they are on a Tier 1/Tier 2 tariff or a daily standing charge as they 'use up' their tier 1 allowance anyway.

On OVO for my area the standing charge is £126 for gas and £63/£49 for the fixed/variable electricity tariff.

On BG Websaver 7 it is effectively £104.44 gas and £68.62 electricity assuming you use all your Tier 1 allocation.

I used £303 on gas and £197 on electricity in my last quarterly bills. I'm not sure whether to go with the Ovo fixed deal which offers £645 savings fixed over 12 months or go for edf fixed 2015 which will save £125 over the new BG offer. The penalties for leaving edf put me off a bit.

Also coming to the end of the BG five year fix. Just done a comparison which gives Southern as cheapest, yet when I do the calculations using their unit charge and tier levels my latest bill would be £50 more than BG will be on the new tarriff!

Bit late now, but it looks like more work required. I also need a magnifying glass to read the BG small print, espeically aorund cancellation fees, it is so small it is barely readable.

EDF Energy have a tariff called Online Saver Version 6 which is pretty cheap. Might be worth checking that out.

£35 canx fee per fuel I believe if you leave before the tariff ends in 2012 (but you aren't charged if you move house). If you want to opt out, fill out the coupon or give them a call. :)

The cancellation charge is waived until the end of May 2010 - so that gives a month to decide what to do.

It will take me that long!

Are you going to go for Ovo then Cardew?

    Yes.

The 12 months fixed deal is marginally cheaper(£13) for me; same prices for everything except daily standing charge for Electricity.

In the unlikely event(IMO) of prices dropping considerably after next month I will 'bite the bullet' and pay the exit penalty of £30 for each fuel and move.

Run into a problem with OVO.

I used to have Economy 7, however as it wasn't cost effective I changed to a 'Normal' 24/7 tariff.

However I retained the two meters and BG just add the totals from the two meter readings and treat it as one total. e.g. 1,000kWh on the old E7 night meter and 3,000kWh on the day meter is treated as 4,000kWh.

OVO's computer system cannot cope with 2 meter readings on a non-E7 tariff and will only take me on if I want E7 - which I don't.

    Back to the drawing board.

Will they not change the meter(s) over for you?

Could be why BG add them together instead of changing the meter - to cause problems when it comes to switching?

BG did something to the records to my mothers house when one of their doorknockers hoodwinked her into switching to them, she was with Scottish power and hadnt had an E7 meter for 25 years, she got switched to BG then when she applied to go back to SP they said their metering wasnt compatable with her meter (despite being with them for several years before the switch to BG)

Turns out BG had somehow doctored the records to show there was an E7 meter at the property (but not charging her for E7) and it took them about 6 months to sort the problems out (after I got involved and took the complaint to a higher level)
    Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently! ;)

OVO want "about £150" to change the meter.

To be fair to BG, the house originally had E7 and I applied to go on a normal tariff and BG's solution worked.
